In the Star Wars universe, there are few tales as grim, daring, and shockingly unforeseen as “Star Wars: Dark Empire”. This narrative is part of the “Legends” continuity, which means it’s no longer considered official lore. However, it presents an exhilarating “what if” exploration of what might have transpired post-“Return of the Jedi”. Indeed, this story concludes with Luke Skywalker succumbing to the Dark Side.
Eager to learn more? Let’s delve into the intriguing ‘Dark Empire’ comic series and unravel the peculiar sequence of events that prompted Luke Skywalker to switch from his Jedi attire to something decidedly more… leanings towards the dark side, or Sith-inspired.
Ten Years After the Emperor’s Fall
A decade has passed since the devastation of the second Death Star, yet surprisingly, the galaxy remains engulfed in conflict. Despite the fall of the Emperor, the Empire persisted in different forms – warlords and fractured groups vying for power, disorder seizing the heart of the Galactic Core, and a sinister new force lurking ominously in the shadows. As a cinephile immersed in this universe, I can’t help but wonder what lies ahead for our heroes amidst this turmoil.
In this thrilling scenario, Han Solo, Leia Organa, Chewbacca, and C-3PO embark on a perilous rescue operation to find Luke Skywalker and Lando Calrissian, who mysteriously disappeared during the fierce conflict over Coruscant. Guiding the Millenium Falcon skillfully through the debris of Imperial Star Destroyers, Han speculates that Luke might have landed smack in the middle of the turmoil. Meanwhile, as colossal AT-AT walkers rumble and shake the ground, Leia channels the Force, annihilating one with just her escalating bond to it.

The Big Entrance: Dark-Side Luke
Suddenly, an unanticipated character joins the action. A mysterious figure, shrouded in darkness, waves a hand, effortlessly eliminating Imperial robots. This enigmatic figure turned out to be none other than Luke Skywalker. However, this wasn’t the Luke we knew from the farm – he was now more intense, significantly stronger, and, truthfully, quite intimidating.
In simpler terms, after reconnecting with his friends, Luke announces something shocking – the Imperial Palace conceals power more sinister than any civil war. Despite Leia and Han urging him to leave, Luke insists on staying, citing it as his fate. With this, he ventures off into a tempest of untamed energy on his own.

Meanwhile…Galaxy-Sized Trouble
In a short while, the New Republic discovers a terrifying development in the Core: colossal machines, each as large as a planet, known as “World Devourers.” These monstrosities consume entire worlds to power the Imperial war effort. Regrettably, one of these initial targets turns out to be Admiral Ackbar’s homeworld, Mon Calamari. Despite a valiant effort by the Republic to rally its forces, the damage is already severe and barely enough to prevent total destruction.
Later, Luke resurfaces, yet he’s not the champion people anticipated. Instead, he’s aligned with the ominous Dark Side. Shockingly, Luke finds himself back on the ominous Imperial fortress of Byss, confronting an astonishing reality: It seems Emperor Palpatine has somehow returned!
Anyone else feeling Deja Vu?

Yes, Palpatine Returned….in Clone Form (Sound Familiar?)
In simpler terms, Palpatine explains that he managed to survive the Death Star explosion by transferring his consciousness into different clone bodies. This is how he tricked death. His ultimate scheme involves constructing a powerful fleet of weaponry capable of destroying entire galaxies. Interestingly, he intends Luke Skywalker to become his successor in this evil plan.
In a surprising turn of events, Luke agrees but refuses to serve. His hidden agenda is to dismantle the Empire from its core. Assuming command of the World Devastators, he presents himself as Palpatine’s devoted apprentice, while covertly plotting his demise.
In this cinematic review, I must confess that Han Solo hides a secret from his companions, a fact that leaves him feeling betrayed. Princess Leia, my dear sister, can sense her brother’s descent into darkness and takes it upon herself to save him. Our journey leads us to the treacherous planet of Byss, where we encounter dangerous bounty hunters, reconnect with old friends, and receive a powerful Jedi lightsaber from an ex-Knight of the Order. As I navigate this perilous path while heavily pregnant, Leia is guided by the Force every step of the way as she delves deep into the Empire’s very core.

Leia vs The Emperor
When Leia eventually locates Luke, he appears hardly recognizable. He’s turned cold, calculating, and is serving under the Emperor. Yet, a glimmer of goodness still shines within him. Feeling the presence of both Skywalkers, Palpatine discloses his ultimate scheme: to seize Leia’s unborn child who possesses immense Force power, making them a potential ruler of the galaxy.
As a devoted cinephile, I’d rephrase that scene in a personal narrative style:
I found myself standing against the mighty Emperor, a battle I knew was destined to be my undoing. Yet, even in defeat, I managed to sow a seed of uncertainty within Luke’s mind. That moment of doubt proved to be the chink in Palpatine’s armor, and gradually, Luke began to perceive the truth that had been hidden from him all along.
In a private conversation with my sister, I shared my covert plan with her. R2-D2 then took on the crucial role of carrying the master codes essential for disabling the World Devastators, marking a turning point in our quest for victory.
The team manages to flee Byss, R2 sends the necessary codes to the New Republic which ultimately leads to the destruction of the superweapons. However, Luke finds it necessary to revisit Byss to eliminate the remaining clones of Palpatine.
1. The group successfully leaves Byss, with R2 relaying the essential codes to the New Republic, resulting in the annihilation of the superweapons. Nevertheless, Luke feels compelled to go back to Byss to wipe out Palpatine’s remaining clones.
Lastly:
1. The team exits Byss, as R2 forwards the crucial codes to the New Republic, which ultimately causes the downfall of the superweapons. Yet, Luke feels the need to return to Byss and eradicate Palpatine’s remaining clones.

The Final Showdown
In the end, Luke manages to destroy the cloning facility, but unfortunately, it comes too late as Palpatine has already obtained a new body. The climactic battle ensues in Palpatine’s throne room, where the Force pulses with such immense power that it seems like the entire galaxy could be on the verge of splintering apart.
In the heat of battle, Luke meets his end, but Emperor Palpatine commits a fateful blunder by ordering Luke to bow down. Instead of complying, Luke stands tall beside Leia. The powerful twin Skywalkers then unleash an immense burst of the Force, causing it to rebound against Palpatine and his Eclipse-class warship, which is eventually destroyed along with him.
The galaxy breathes again…but the emotional scars remain.
A Prophecy and a New Hope – Literally
At their Rebel hideout, Leia examines a holocron left by an old Jedi Master, revealing a prophecy from over a thousand years ago: a sibling with the destiny of the Jedi, another who will succumb to darkness yet rise again, and her offspring, marking the start of a new epoch.
Luke and Leia recognize that the war is far from over, yet they grasp a crucial truth: the essence of Jediism does not persist through power or control, but through empathy, selflessness, and solidarity.
Why Dark Empire Still Matters
The influential work “Star Wars: Dark Empire,” penned in the Expanded Universe following the release of “Return of the Jedi” in 1983, played a significant role in rekindling fans’ enthusiasm for Star Wars when initial excitement had waned. Later on,
Additionally, it proposed the concept that Palpatine continued his existence through cloned bodies, a notion that stirred debates back then and continues to divide opinions today. However, its impact on the Star Wars universe is undeniable – a fact that JJ Abrams seems to have taken notice of.
At the given occasion, Leia gives birth to Anakin Solo, her third child with Han (alongside Jacen and Jaina). This birth initiates a new generation of Skywalkers, one that would shape numerous tales in the Star Wars universe, later becoming legendary.
