How Conan O’Brien REALLY felt about Matthew Perry filming Friends with his then girlfriend Lisa Kudrow
As a dedicated fan of both Conan O’Brien and Lisa Kudrow, I can’t help but be moved by their heartfelt conversation about their past experiences and the impact of Matthew Perry’s passing on their lives.
Conan O’Brien openly acknowledged feeling envious of Matthew Perry when Lisa Kudrow enthusiastically praised his humor after their initial encounter.
O’Brien, aged 61, and Kudrow, 60, had a romantic connection from 1988 to 1993. During this time, they were still together when Friends’ first season was being filmed with Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, David Schwimmer, and Matt LeBlanc in the late 1990s.
In an interview on her ex’s podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, actress Kudrow shared that she has been re-watching Friends frequently since Perry passed away in October 2023. She expressed her admiration for her former costars by calling them “extraordinarily funny.”
In the past, when reminiscing with Kudrow about the beginning of your filming experience, O’Brien expressed, “You remember how you first started that show and called me up, absolutely thrilled about…” She then excitedly interjected, “Matthew!”
O’Brien went on to admit, “I felt a pang of jealousy listening to you. I thought, ‘I can make you laugh quite well,’ but then you insisted, ‘No, no, this man is exceptionally funny!'”
“Nope, I didn’t do that much wrong!” Laughing it off, Kudrow responded: “Oh, come on, that’s just how humans are.”
Kudrow affirmed to her ex-boyfriend, “You’re absolutely hilarious,” to which O’Brien retorted, “This isn’t about that…,” as Kudrow persisted, “One of the most comedic people I know… I must admit, it’s painful now to say this, but it’s still a fact.”
Regarding her deceased friend Perry once more, Kudrow commented: “His talent was immense. When I first read about the Chandler role, my reaction was: ‘They’ve added a gay character, that’s progressive,’ without fully grasping the richness of the part.”
At the table, I was taken aback when I saw him reading. “Wow,” I thought, completely surprised by how perfectly he brought the character to life with his unique style and rhythm. O’Brien agreed, adding, “His timing was impeccable.”
Regarding her role as Phoebe Buffay among the Friends cast, Kudrow shared: “I found it hard to watch the show at first. When I saw it on, I’d be somewhat intrigued, but then catching a glimpse of myself would make me cringe and turn it off.”
After Matthew passed away, I was able to resume watching the show since it no longer held personal significance for me, as it became connected to his memory instead.
Since his passing, I’ve been binge-watching Friends marathons non-stop for extended periods.
The actress added a brief mention of Perry’s personal hardships during Friends’ rise to fame, stating: “Everyone was thrilled, and I believe he was among them. They thought, ‘This is fantastic! Everything will be repaired now.’ But that’s not how it works.”
Last year on October 28, Perry, a long-time struggle fighter against substance abuse, tragically lost his life at the age of 54. The unfortunate incident occurred when he accidentally drowned in a jacuzzi in Los Angeles.
In December 2023, an autopsy report revealed that Perry’s cause of death was both acute ketamine intoxication and drowning. The amount of ketamine found in his body was comparable to that of a person under general anesthesia at the hospital.
Since then, the LAPD has begun an investigation into the circumstances of Perry’s death.
More recently, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) announced with confidence that they have sufficient evidence to bring charges against several individuals for distributing drugs that led to fatalities or severe injuries.
