How Céline Dion reacted to her triumphant Eiffel Tower performance at Paris Olympics
As a lifelong cinephile and music enthusiast, I was absolutely captivated by Céline Dion’s triumphant return to the world stage during the 2024 Paris Olympics opening ceremony. Her performance of “L’Hymne à l’amour” on the iconic Eiffel Tower under the massive Olympics logo was a breathtaking moment that brought chills down my spine.
At the opening ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympics on a Friday, Céline Dion made her comeback to the global scene. The significance of this event wasn’t overlooked by her.
A renowned vocalist, who had been absent from public performances for decades due to health issues resulting from a rare neurological condition, brought the Olympics closing ceremony to a memorable close by singing “L’Hymne à l’amour” on the Eiffel Tower, adorned with a large Olympics emblem.
The French-Canadian star expressed her gratitude and delight on Instagram on Friday, writing: “I’m privileged to have taken part in tonight’s Paris 2024 Opening Ceremony. I’m overjoyed to be back in one of my most cherished cities!”
The 56-year-old turned her admiration to the athletes competing in the summer games.
As a movie critic, I’m thrilled beyond words to honor these exceptional athletes and their inspiring journeys of sacrifice and resilience. Each of you has poured all your energy into realizing your dreams, and even if you don’t leave with a medal, being here represents the accomplishment of that goal for you.
At the “My Heart Will Go On” singer’s concert by the Seine River, which lasted nearly four hours and featured various music genres and French talents, took place despite the rain. The event included live performances from artists such as Lady Gaga, renowned French Malian artist Aya Nakamura, opera singer Axelle Saint-Cirel, and the “eco-metal” band Gojira. Additionally, athletes representing over 200 nations sent their delegations in a boat procession to light a floating cauldron.
As a seasoned artist and performer myself, I can truly appreciate the depth of emotion and encouragement that Dion conveyed in his message. His words resonate deeply with me, as I too have faced numerous challenges and setbacks throughout my career.
Dion’s renowned singing career took an unexpected pause about two years ago during a tour when she disclosed that she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, a seldom-seen neurological condition. This illness significantly impacts “all facets” of her daily existence, causing painful muscle spasms and challenges with walking and breathing. In a pre-release interview for her June documentary, “I Am: Céline Dion,” the five-time Grammy Award recipient shared that she has experienced broken ribs due to the spasms and her singing voice can sound more nasal at times. The documentary featured a scene of Dion suffering from an intense seizure, adding to the anticipation and worry surrounding her live performance at the Olympics.
After her successful show, Dion kept sharing about the glamorous event on Instagram. She posted pictures and humorous memes related to it, as well as responded to messages and comments about her performance in her Instagram stories.
“What an unforgettable night! I’m deeply grateful to @paris2024, @olympics, and @dior for turning this dream into reality. It’s hard to believe it’s time to leave, Paris. I’ll cherish the memories. – Celine xx” (Shared on Sunday, an image of her in casual attire looking out of a window.)
Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s creative director at the renowned French fashion house, gave fans an exclusive peek into the crafting process of Rihanna’s stunning haute couture dress for the ceremony, as she was one of the headliners wearing Dior designs.
The embroidered white silk dress — paired with Dior shoes — was “crafted in a vision of #DiorSavoirFaire dreams” and “adorned with sequins as lustrous as the stars and fringes that danced with every gesture,” Dior said on Instagram.
“The dress wrapped her in an atmosphere, enhancing her singing voice and moving people’s hearts everywhere,” the fashion house stated.
