As a follower, I’ve been closely watching the prolonged legal dispute between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, with no clear end in sight as the trial is scheduled for March 2026. But recently, there’s been some positive news for Blake, scoring two significant victories. Interestingly enough, this update broke just a day before the one-year anniversary of ‘It Ends With Us’, serving as a reminder of the passage of time amidst this intricate situation that continues to evolve.
The Big Wins Blake Lively Got In Her Legal Battle With Justin Baldoni
On August 8th, exactly one day prior to the first anniversary of “It Ends With Us” and approximately two months following a court dismissal of Baldoni’s lawsuits, two decisions were made in favor of Lively.
As a supporter, I’d like to share that in a recent turn of events, I was involved in a situation where Manhattan federal Judge Lewis Liman took notice of my team’s actions. He expressed concern that we might have attempted to stir up public interest and controversy by releasing a nearly 300-page transcript from Blake Lively’s deposition on a public court docket.
While Judge Liman acknowledged that depositions are typically part of litigation, he found our approach to be anything but usual. Consequently, he made the decision to remove this deposition from the record. As reported by NY Post, his reasoning was that such actions were not standard procedure in these circumstances.
Instead of routinely including the full confidential deposition transcript while referencing only a few sections, it’s uncommon to do so with the intention of placing additional responsibility on the opposing party and the court for justifying ongoing secrecy.
As a movie enthusiast, I found myself right in the middle of an intriguing situation when Lively’s team suggested that Baldoni’s actions were causing quite a spectacle – essentially a media circus. They also argued that this situation compelled them to unnecessarily advocate for the sealed transcript to remain confidential. On the other hand, it seemed like the director’s camp took such measures to bolster their claim that they hadn’t been communicating with an intention to carry out character assassination.
Nonetheless, the judge’s decision pointed out that Baldoni’s letter took “a single piece of a sentence from Lively’s deposition.” In the end, Liman concurred with his team, stating:
1. However, it was observed by the judge that Baldoni’s letter only utilized “a portion of one sentence from Lively’s testimony.”
2. The judge found that Baldoni’s letter drew from “just a piece of Lively’s sworn statement.”
3. It was noted by the judge that Baldoni’s letter selectively used “a snippet of a sentence from Lively’s court statement.”
4. The judge pointed out that Baldoni’s letter cherry-picked “a small part of a sentence in Lively’s deposition.”
5. It was observed by the judge that Baldoni’s letter quoted “only a fragment of one sentence in Lively’s testimony.”
In my opinion as a movie critic, it’s clear that the Wayfarer Parties have been unnecessarily padding their documents with irrelevant material. If I were in Lively’s position, I would be compelled to address these unnecessary pages, which the Wayfarer Parties could then exploit for their own public relations gains. The court has both the authority and the duty to intervene in such a situation to ensure fairness and maintain order.
The report mentions that there’s a chance this evidence could be presented at a later stage in the ongoing court case.
Additionally, Judge Liman made a decision concerning Perez Hilton’s court correspondence with Lively. Hilton is engaged in a dispute over a subpoena from Lively, and this ruling prohibits him from employing disrespectful, impolite language, derogatory nicknames, and personal attacks in his legal documents moving forward. This decision comes following six letters to the court where Hilton referred to Lively’s lawyer as “deplorable” and addressed Lively herself as a “princess who loves plantations.” According to Hilton, he intends to comply with this order.
Making it even more timely is that it occurred a day prior to the one-year anniversary of “It Ends With Us.
This Happened One Day Before It Ends With Us’ One-Year Anniversary
The legal dispute between Baldoni and Lively started in December 2024. Lively, an actress, filed a lawsuit against her fellow actor, alleging sexual harassment and a malicious campaign against her by him and his team. He retaliated with a countersuit against her and Ryan Reynolds, accusing them of extortion, defamation, and invasion of privacy. However, Lively’s lawsuit was dismissed in June.
Prior to this escalating into a legal dispute, whispers were circulating everywhere. On August 9, 2024, when “It Ends With Us” was released, rumors about a disagreement between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni began to gather momentum. These rumors were centered around speculation of edits in the movie, potential involvement of Ryan Reynolds in the film, and various other aspects.
Then, things really escalated at the end of 2024 when this situation turned into a legal one.
Despite the overwhelming attention It Ends With Us has garnered overall, it’s worth mentioning that the film adaptation of the story (available to stream with a Netflix subscription) was indeed successful. The movie generated impressive box office numbers, earning approximately $351.4 million globally and $148.5 million in the US alone. This substantial revenue was achieved on an initial investment of just $25 million.
Given its impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter, speculations arose about the possibility of a sequel, “It Starts With Us.” However, as of now, there is no news regarding its production.
Despite the ongoing legal dispute between Lively and Baldoni, the film continues to generate conversation. Rest assured, we’ll keep you informed as more details emerge.
