How a New Group of Survivors in The Last of Us Episode 3 Could Play a Frightening Role in the Drama to Come

Following the tragic occurrences from the previous Sunday’s episode of The Last of Us, this week’s broadcast signified a fresh beginning for Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and the remaining survivors, who were all affected by the assault by the infected horde on Jackson.

In Episode 3, we skip forward a few months from when Tommy bid farewell to his brother’s remains and Ellie was traumatically awakened at Jackson Hospital, remembering Joel’s demise. The scene then shifts to spring, where Ellie is allowed to return home. Later that evening, Dina broke the news that she had been less than truthful – she did, in fact, have information about Abby and her group, who were involved in the brutal murder of Joel.

Dina mentioned spotting a symbol on one of their bags – it was a yellow triangle with a wolf’s head and the initials W-L-F. This reminded her of a tale Eugene (Joe Pantoliano) had shared with her when he was part of the Fireflies. He had spoken about a group from Seattle called the Washington Liberation Front, who were similarly resisting FEDRA; they were known as the Washington Liberation Front or, as they’re referred to in the game, the Wolves.

As a film enthusiast, I was all set to gallop towards Seattle with Ellie, but things didn’t go as planned. The girls shared what they knew with Tommy, who suggested they put it up for a vote at the town hall meeting. Unfortunately, Jackson’s council vetoed it 8-3, despite Tommy’s backing. With our newfound ally Seth by our side, Ellie and Dina decided to strike out on their own towards Seattle – a departure from the events in “The Last of Us Part II” video game, where there was no town hall vote following Joel’s demise. Instead, Tommy sets off for Seattle to track down Abby first, which ultimately leads Ellie and Dina to follow him.

At the finale of the episode, Ellie and Dina arrived in Seattle and were about to step into the city, underestimating the WLF’s influence. But as the final scene unfolded, it was evident that the Wolves held a greater strength than the duo realized—and they also possessed an alarming amount of firepower.

As the storyline unfolds, I found myself meeting an entirely fresh band of characters who are poised to significantly impact this series, provided it maintains some semblance of authenticity with regards to the original game’s events.

Who are the Seraphites?

Approximately twenty minutes into the broadcast, the program switched focus from Jackson to a band of individuals trekking through the forests outside Seattle. These men, distinguished by their shaved heads and hooded garments bearing an enigmatic emblem on the rear, stood out due to deep Glasgow-style scars etched onto their faces. In this initial encounter, one of the men was seen walking with a young girl (likely his daughter), who he informed that they were fleeing home to create distance from a conflict.

Initially, it seems that the group was ambushed, and later on in the storyline, Ellie and Dina stumbled upon their lifeless bodies as they journeyed towards Seattle. Although the series hasn’t disclosed their identities yet, those familiar with the video game will recognize them as part of the Seraphite faction.

The Seraphites, or sometimes called The Scars, are followers of a religious group established in Seattle post-Cordyceps pandemic outbreak. Their faith stems from the teachings of a woman known as the Prophet. In the game The Last of Us Part II, it’s been some time since the Prophet passed away, but her ideology persists. She believed that humanity’s heavy reliance on technology led to the pandemic, advocating for a life close to nature and shunning anything from the “Old World.” Initially, the Seraphites were a peaceful community; however, as their devotion intensified, they adopted more peculiar and violent rituals into their way of life.

In the game “The Last of Us Part II”, the Seraphites are embroiled in a fierce conflict with the Wolves over control of Seattle, since the WLF ousted FEDRA and seized power in the city. If the series maintains a similar trajectory as the game, it’s likely we’ll uncover significant details about the Seraphites and their role in the impending violence.
