Titles like Bloodmoon, Snow, and Empire of Ash. For almost seven years now, since the controversial finale of Game of Thrones, several potential follow-up shows set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire have been proposed, but most have been canceled or put on hold.
Aside from House of the Dragon, which tells the story of a Targaryen civil war 170 years before Game of Thrones, no other spin-off series had aired—until now. On January 18th, the first episode of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut on HBO. Created by showrunner Ira Parker (House of the Dragon, Better Things) and author George R.R. Martin, the series follows the journey of Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall (Peter Claffey), a wandering knight, and his young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell).
The first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg. It follows Dunk across six episodes as he tries to make a name for himself. After his mentor, Ser Arlan, dies while traveling to a jousting tournament, Dunk sees an opportunity. He decides to pretend to be a knight and compete at Ashford Meadow in the Reach, a region of Westeros. During his journey, he meets the clever Egg and takes him on as his squire, forming an unexpected friendship.
Dunk doesn’t realize that the young boy, Egg, is actually Prince Aegon Targaryen – a prince from a powerful family. Egg is the fourth son of Prince Maekar Targaryen and the grandson of King Daeron II, but he’s currently living as a commoner. Eventually, through a surprising turn of events, Egg will become king, earning the nickname “Aegon the Unlikely.”

This new series will be less serious than previous installments, shifting its focus from the noble families and power struggles to the everyday lives of common people in Westeros. According to George R.R. Martin, it won’t feature dragons or large-scale battles; instead, it’s set in a rural location with a temporary encampment and a few horses.
Ultimately, we’re aiming for the dynamic you saw in Game of Thrones, focusing on the compelling conversations between interesting pairs of characters. Like Arya and the Hound, or Brienne and Podrick, we want to create that same connection and believe that’s a key reason Thrones was so successful – and a big part of what I enjoyed about it.
“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is set in the world of “Song of Ice and Fire” about 80 years after the events of “House of the Dragon” and 90 years before “Game of Thrones.” It’s a period of relative peace, with the Targaryens still in power, but dragons are no longer around.
The first season of the show closely follows the plot of George R.R. Martin’s novella, The Hedge Knight. A second season has already been approved and will be based on the second novella, The Sworn Sword. Martin explained to The Reporter that he has many more stories about the characters Dunk and Egg, but needs to write them down first, as he’s only published three novellas so far.
