The new movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, hits theaters next week, just seven months after 28 Years Later was released. Interestingly, while both films were shot one after the other, Nia DaCosta directed the sequel, replacing Danny Boyle who directed the first film.
Danny Boyle returned as producer, and Alex Garland, the writer of the original film, also came back to write the script. Because of this, the new movie continues the story from 28 Years Later, but it won’t be a simple repeat of what you’ve seen before.
Ralph Fiennes, returning as Dr. Ian Kelson, recalls a strong sense of mutual respect on set. He explained to Digital Spy that after finishing Danny’s film, the transition to Nia’s film happened seamlessly without any need for planning or discussion.

Danny and Alex didn’t try to change the direction of the sequel. We already understood the story’s overall plan from the original script, so we trusted director Nia to lead the way.
The important scenes between Kelson and Samson, and those Jack O’Connell shared with my character, were filmed simply, but with really powerful and interesting camera angles. The director let the tension build naturally between the actors and their characters. It was a different approach – she wanted the scenes to unfold in a classic, almost traditional way, and I really appreciated that.

As Fiennes hinted, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple centers on the compelling connection between Dr. Kelson and Samson, the infected leader first seen in the original film. Dr. Kelson also faces a new danger in the form of Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal, played by O’Connell.
In the second story, the connection between Dr. Kelson and Samson changes in surprising ways.
Because the movies were filmed one after the other, Chi Lewis-Parry, the actor who plays Samson, was able to develop a strong understanding of his character just by reading the script. This helped director Maria DaCosta realize her unique creative vision for the film.

I often asked for advice when I was unsure about something or needed help making a decision. Because we filmed both movies back-to-back, after receiving both scripts at the same time and treating them as one continuous story, the overall picture became very clear, he explained to Digital Spy.
Alex is a remarkably skilled writer who is thorough and detailed. His clear and well-structured work made it easy for us to collaborate effectively on screen, leading to a strong working relationship.
The new film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be shown in UK cinemas starting January 14th, and in US cinemas beginning January 16th.
