House of the Dragon tops the streaming charts for the first time with 1.27 billion viewing minutes… besting Suits and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F
As a die-hard fan of epic fantasy series and a longtime Game of Thrones devotee, I can confidently say that House of the Dragon has officially taken the throne as the reigning champion of streaming entertainment! The numbers don’t lie – with a staggering 1.27 billion viewing minutes during the week of July 8-14, it has solidified its position atop the charts and left other titans of the screen scrambling to catch up.
Last week, from July 8th to the 14th, I was thrilled to witness HBO’s House of the Dragons climb to the summit of the streaming rankings for the very first time – an accomplishment made all the more significant as we approach the final episode of Series 2.
The HBO prequel series to Game of Thrones amassed a whopping 1.27 billion viewing minutes for that week, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
During the July 1-7 period, streaming platforms recorded an all-time high of over 313 billion minutes watched, as per Nielsen’s latest report.
For the first time since monitoring started, all the top 10 overall titles surpassed a billion total viewing minutes.
During the period from July 8-14, there was a slight downturn, as the first and second most popular shows, which were House of the Dragon’s rivals – Netflix’s Suits and Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F – experienced a substantial drop. This opened up an opportunity for House of the Dragon to claim the top spot.
Suits dropped 28% from the previous week to second place with 1.07 billion viewing minutes
The program, available for streaming on both Netflix and Peacock following its initial airing on USA Network, ranked as the third most popular, trailing slightly behind Bluey on Disney Plus (with 1.08 billion views) in the runner-up position.
In the past week, Amazon’s series The Boys accumulated 1.05 billion minutes watched, making it the fourth most-watched show and extending its streak to five weeks above the 1-billion-minute threshold.
Love Island surpassed its competitors by achieving 1 billion total minutes watched for the very first time. This impressive feat was accomplished across streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, and Peacock, with a total of 1.03 billion minutes enjoyed by viewers.
Completing the list of the top 10 most-watched shows were Dexter from Netflix and Paramount Plus (with 982 million views), Grey’s Anatomy on Hulu and Netflix (957 million views), Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F on Netflix (917 million views), Your Honor shared by Netflix and Paramount Plus (887 million views), and Family Guy on Hulu (850 million views).
In terms of original series rankings, The Boys and Love Island led the way with 1.05 billion and 1.03 billion views respectively. Notably, Hulu’s The Bear saw a significant drop, landing in third place with 781 million views.
Seven Netflix shows, including Desperate Lies with 581 million views, Receiver with 559 million, Vikings: Valhalla with 555 million, Bridgerton with 537 million, Supacell with 445 million, The Mole with 376 million, and Stranger Things with 375 million, were added to the original top 10 chart as they marked the show’s return.
Despite dropping a significant 55% in its second week on Netflix, the movie version of Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F continued to hold the top spots on the chart.
The viewing minutes exceeded 917 million, making it number one over the live-action/animated blend show ‘IF’, which garnered 607 million viewing minutes during its initial week on Paramount Plus.
The top 5 movies were completed by “Divorce in the Black” from Amazon Prime Video, which had 498 million views, as well as “Paw Patrol: The Movie” on Netflix and Paramount Plus with 387 million views, and “Descendants: The Rise of Red” on Disney+, also with 386 million views.
The top 10 is rounded out by Netflix’s A Family Affair (374 million), Max’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (363 million), Netflix’s The Long Game (342 million), Disney Plus’ Inside Out (323 million) and Netflix’s Minions (282 million).
In simple terms, the statistics provided by Nielsen for streaming data come exclusively from traditional televisions and exclude data from mobile devices. Additionally, these figures are limited to viewers based in the United States.
