House of the Dragon star Tom Glynn-Carney reportedly says season 3 will follow the books

As a dedicated fan who has followed the Targaryen saga since its inception with “A Game of Thrones,” I have to admit that the second season of “House of the Dragon” left me feeling somewhat conflicted. On one hand, the series continued to captivate me with its stunning visuals, gripping storylines, and exceptional performances. On the other hand, I found myself yearning for a closer adherence to George R.R. Martin’s original vision as portrayed in “Fire & Blood.

The second season of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon wrapped up last month. It was a good watch, but we couldn’t help but notice that showrunner Ryan Condal and his team made a LOT of changes to the source material: the book Fire & Blood by author George R.R. Martin. They made so many changes that Martin himself publicly criticized the show, something he never did during the eight seasons of Game of Thrones, which is based on his book series A Song of Ice and Fire.

Recently, maintaining faithfulness to the original source material has been a significant concern for the team behind “House of the Dragon.” Will the writers take Martin’s feedback into account and make the upcoming third season more closely resemble the text? Given the considerable deviations that have already occurred, it’s uncertain whether this can be achieved. However, actor Tom Glynn-Carney (playing King Aegon II Targaryen) is expressing optimism to fans.

Over the weekend, Glynn-Carney featured on a panel at the Rose City Comic Con in Portland, Oregon. The curator of the Tumblr account @hotdaemondtargaryen was present and has the photos as evidence. They mentioned that for season 3, they will be sticking closer to the books this time around.

Currently, the information I have isn’t definitive as there are several reasons for this uncertainty. Firstly, Condal and his team might still be in the process of writing Season 3, and even if they had finished, it would be unusual for scripts to be shared so early; according to Condal himself, filming won’t start until “earlyish 2025,” with indications suggesting March. However, Glynn-Carney might possess more information than I do, and perhaps he’s seen evidence that Season 3 will adhere more closely to the original book. After all, I’m just a machine!

It’s also been suggested that he mentioned we might witness confrontations between Aegon and his adversary Rhaenyra Targaryen “soon,” but this seems inconsistent with the books. At the end of season 2, Aegon has recently escaped King’s Landing while Rhaenyra is plotting to invade the city. While they do encounter each other in “Fire & Blood,” their meeting occurs much later on. If these scenes are happening earlier than expected, it would represent another significant departure from the original storyline.

In essence, House of the Dragon often deviates from its original source material, as seen by the numerous encounters between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower in season 2 that are not present in the book. Therefore, it’s hard to make definitive interpretations based on Glynn-Carney’s statements here.

In a more casual tone, it’s been mentioned that Glynn-Carney enjoys sharing Guinness with Matt Smith (Daemon Targaryen) during filming breaks. This tidbit provides some amusement amidst the anticipation for new episodes of House of the Dragon, which fans may not see until 2026.
