House of the Dragon star talks Addam of Hull: What does he want, and why did Seasmoke pick him?

As a huge fan of “House of the Dragon,” I was absolutely thrilled to see three peasants claiming dragons and joining Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s air force in last night’s episode, “The Red Sowing.” The way Clinton Liberty spoke about Addam of Hull’s connection with Seasmoke really resonated with me.

In last night’s episode of “House of the Dragon,” titled “The Red Sowing,” three commoners were promoted in society by obtaining dragons and joining Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen’s dragon corps. Ulf White was granted the dragon Silverwing, Hugh Hammer formed a connection with Vermithor, while Addam of Hull became the new rider for Seasmoke, which had previously been ridden by Rhaenyra’s late husband Laenor Velaryon.

We believe it was the late Lord Laenor Velaryon, husband to Rhaenyra, who disappeared from royal life with his lover in the first season. However, dragons typically do not accept new riders unless their previous one has passed away. Consequently, we assume that Laenor met his end offscreen. It’s worth noting that Seasmoke, Rhaenyra’s dragon, seems to have chosen Addam of Hull, Laenor’s bastard half-brother, as its new rider. This coincidence is unlikely to be mere chance.

As the gamer representing Clinton Liberty, I’m left pondering the mysterious disappearance of Laenor. Yet, our familial ties can’t be ignored – we share a common lineage within the esteemed Hull/Velaryon clan. It’s more than just a label; it’s an underlying essence that permeates our characters.

As a gamer, I’ve noticed that in this fantasy world, the bond between dragons and riders isn’t fully understood by all. But Clinton Liberty seems convinced it goes beyond bloodline. For instance, Steffon Darklyn may have the right pedigree, but Seasmoke sensed something was off. It wasn’t until we encountered Laenor and Addam that I realized – they share similar blood, yes, but more importantly, they possess kind, decent essences. So it seems the dragon chooses its rider based on their inner qualities rather than just their lineage.

And it’s funny to say that in a world of hard-hearted people who are trying to claim glory, win whatever the cost is. I feel like that’s also an important factor for a dragon to choose a human to bond with, because dragons are very intelligent. They know who the essence of the human is behind the facade the human’s trying to portray. So I think it’s a mixture of blood — but it’s also who this human being is.

As a gamer, I can tell you from my experience that Addam comes across as an honest and kind-hearted character. However, when it comes to dragons, nothing is certain. Vermithor connected with the hot-headed Hugh Hammer, while Silverwing formed a bond with Ulf, who spends most of his time at the local tavern. Addam himself acknowledges that he bends the truth on occasion. For instance, during our conversation on the beach with Rhaenyra, he lied about his father’s significance. In reality, we know that Addam and his brother Alyn (Abubakar Salim) are the illegitimate children of Corlys Velaryon (Steve Toussaint), who is a powerful figure in Rhaenyra’s court. Addam keeps quiet about this fact to protect himself, knowing that revealing the truth could have severe consequences, potentially even leading to being attacked by dragonfire. It’s an intriguing twist to his character development.

Addam of Hull wants his father’s approval

As a seasoned nobleman with a wealth of experience under my belt, I can’t help but be impressed by the news that Corlys’ bastard son has been granted the honor of dragon-rider. It’s not every day that an illegitimate child rises to such heights in our rigid and tradition-bound society.

Addam may not have much, but this small validation from his father means the world to him. According to Liberty, Addam deeply longs for approval from his father. His entire life, he’s worked hard to gain it and build a stronger bond with his parents. Unfortunately, he never had that close relationship with his dad, Corlys. This desire is one of the reasons why Addam encourages Alyn to take the throne of Driftmark and improve their lives, hoping that someday he could be closer to his father. In this scene, for the first time, they engage in a meaningful conversation, and it’s also the first instance where Corlys acknowledges and praises Addam. Moving forward, Addam continues to strive for more recognition from his father, seeking to prove himself even further in order to strengthen their relationship.

He just wants his family to be proud of him. He wants his people to be proud of him, if that’s the queen or his father or his brother. I think him wanting to achieve great things — and the riches and the throne and the servants — is all to show his father or his queen that “I am someone of importance. Please, just see me as a person.”

Alyn of Hull learns that his brother is a dragon-rider

I’m a big fan of the character Addam from the series. He has an elder brother named Alyn of Hull, who is likewise a bastard son of Corlys Velaryon. Our dear Corlys has a special bond with Alyn and even appointed him as his first mate.

Among the two brothers, Alyn is the more solemn and composed, while Addam is the thrill-seeker and agreeable one. It came as a shock to Alyn when he found out that Addam had acquired a dragon, but rest assured, he will stand by his brother’s side. According to actor Abubakar Salim, who portrays Alyn, “Alyn deeply cares for his only sibling, Addam. Whenever we film our scenes together, Clinton (the actor playing Addam) and I always discuss the length of their separation and what new adventures they must share and catch up on.”

This is precious time. Now that there’s a dragon in the mix, you’re like, “OK what timing is it going to be like now? Our lives are going in very interesting and different ways.” And I think that’s what’s going make everything more tense going into the finale.

As a dedicated fan of “Game of Thrones” and its prequel series, “House of the Dragon,” I am thrilled to share my excitement about the upcoming season 2 finale. Having closely followed the storyline and anticipating each new twist and turn, I can hardly contain my enthusiasm as we approach the final episode this coming Sunday, August 4. The rich characters, intricate plot, and stunning visuals have kept me hooked, and I am eager to find out how it all unfolds. Let’s not forget the cliffhangers and unexpected twists that are a staple of this captivating series! Can’t wait any longer – bring on Sunday and the conclusion of “House of the Dragon” season 2!
