House of the Dragon star Kieran Bew confirms identity of Hugh’s mother
As a huge fan of “House of the Dragon,” last night’s episode left me absolutely stunned. The revelation that Hugh Hammer, one of Rhaenyra Targaryen’s new dragonriders, is actually the son of Saera Targaryen, the rebellious princess from King’s Landing, was a game-changer.
In last night’s episode of “House of the Dragon,” titled “The Red Sowing,” Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen issued an invitation to all bastards bearing the Targaryen name in the Seven Kingdoms. They were encouraged to make their way to Dragonstone, where they would be given the opportunity to ride a dragon. Wealth and protection would be granted as rewards. This initiative was part of Rhaenyra’s strategy to strengthen her dragon-mounted forces and improve her prospects of seizing the Iron Throne from her half-brother Aegon. Despite the perilous journey and high stakes, by episode’s end, two individuals had successfully formed a connection with their chosen dragons: blacksmith Hugh Hammer claimed Vermithor, while barfly Ulf White bonded with Silverwing.
As I delve deeper into their stories, I come across some intriguing revelations about Hugh and Ulf’s backgrounds. Ulf boldly asserts that Baelon Targaryen is his father, making him the brother of Daemon and Viserys. On the other hand, Hugh confides in his spouse that he has no knowledge of his own father, but shares that his mother was a silver-haired Targaryen princess who worked as a prostitute yet enjoyed special privileges due to her royal lineage.
If you’ve read George R.R. Martin’s book “Fire & Blood,” you’re well aware that only one person fits this description: Saera Targaryen, the ninth child of King Jaecearys and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. They are the grandparents of Daemon Targaryen and great-grandparents to Rhaenyra. From a young age, Saera exhibited mischievous behavior. As she grew into her teenage years, she stirred up a royal scandal when she openly acknowledged sleeping with several men. She reasoned that she should be allowed to marry more than one of them since Aegon the Conqueror had multiple wives; therefore, why shouldn’t she have multiple husbands?
King Jaehaerys held a different perspective. He kept her confined to her chambers but she managed to break free and attempted to seize a dragon. Subsequently, he sent her to live with the Silent Sisters, an order resembling nuns. Yet, even there, she eluded capture. Her next destination was the Free City of Lys in Essos, where she thrived as a prosperous courtesan, bearing at least three illegitimate sons. It turns out that Hugh is one of them.
As a woman of great House Targaryen lineage, I have long pondered the constraints of societal norms and the complexities of love and loyalty. My ancestors, such as the valiant Conqueror and the ambitious Maegor, defied convention by having multiple wives. Their stories resonate deeply with me, challenging my own perceptions of what marriage and commitment truly mean.

Kieran Bew spoke with Decider without explicitly revealing that Saera is Hugh’s mother, but he hinted strongly at it. He shared that the showrunner had told him who his character’s mother is, giving him a rich backstory and motivation. By learning about her and their relationship, Bew gained valuable insight into his character’s background and development. This revelation served as an exciting discovery for him, providing essential context and depth to Hugh’s on-screen persona.
In my opinion, that level of evidence is sufficient for most people. Although it’s uncertain, it seems highly improbable that Saera is still alive now. However, it wouldn’t be prudent to completely dismiss the possibility.
As someone who has been an avid fan of the Game of Thrones universe for years, I find the latest revelation about Saera’s past employment intriguing. Based on the information given, it seems that Saera worked in the Free Cities of Lys and Volantis, which would have required Hugh to make a significant journey to King’s Landing at some point. This possibility raises some questions for me, especially considering the distance between Essos and Westeros, not to mention the challenges one would face during such a journey in that time period.
