An actor from House of the Dragon hinted that the show’s third season will address a major criticism from Season 2. While Season 2 was popular on HBO and Max, some viewers felt it wasn’t as good as the first season. Fans are optimistic that the new season will improve the show and recapture the quality of its initial success.
Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon, recently told Entertainment Tonight (in an interview shared on TikTok) about the show’s upcoming third season. He explained how Season 3 will differ from Season 2, and fans are likely to be excited by the changes. Production on Season 3 has now wrapped up.
As a huge fan of House of the Dragon, I was really excited to hear Smith talking about Season 3. He said it’s going to be significantly larger in scope than Season 2 – basically, everything’s getting turned up a notch. He put it simply: expect Season 3 to be bigger and better in every single way. It sounds like they’re really going all out!
I’m filming it right now. We really aimed to make the show bigger and better this year, and it definitely feels more expansive and epic than before.
Fans of House of the Dragon had several complaints about the show’s second season, but a common one was that it didn’t have enough action or significant events. While there was a large battle in Episode 4 and the ‘Blood and Cheese’ sequence, many viewers felt the season as a whole was lacking in content.
Smith says the show’s third season will improve on the second. The actor, who will soon be in Star Wars, hinted that the new season will be very violent, with “a lot of blood and guts.” While he didn’t share any details, he did mention filming with many large and elaborate sets.
I’m so excited – we’re really in the home stretch of filming now, just a couple of months left! It’s been intense, with a ton of huge action sequences to finish up. And let me tell you, it’s going to be very graphic – lots of blood and, well, everything that goes with it!
The phrase “a lot of blood and a lot of guts” suggests Season 3 of House of the Dragon will feature multiple large-scale action sequences, which would be a welcome improvement after some felt Season 2 lacked in that area.
Fans can look forward to a new Game of Thrones series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, arriving on HBO Max in January. While that’s coming soon, the third season of House of the Dragon isn’t expected until sometime in 2026.
Which Major Events Will Take Place in House of the Dragon Season 3?

When House of the Dragon Season 2 came out, fans didn’t just criticize the lack of action. Many also noticed that the show altered events from George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood, or included scenes that weren’t in the original story.
It’s likely that Season 3 won’t follow the book Fire & Blood exactly as fans hope. But even if it does change some details, we can still get a good sense of what’s coming, as the main storyline will probably stay true to the source material.
As a huge fan of the show, I was really excited to hear from Ryan Condal, the showrunner, that Season 3 is going to focus on four key moments from the Dance of the Dragons. He’s keeping those moments a secret for now, but knowing how Season 2 wrapped up and where we are in the story’s timeline, I think those of us who’ve read the books have a pretty good guess what he’s talking about!
Without giving away any key plot points, the story’s four biggest events will likely be the Battle of the Gullet, the Fall of King’s Landing, the First Battle of Tumbleton, and the Fall of Dragonstone. While the Fall of Dragonstone might be swapped with the Battle Above the Gods Eye, it makes more sense to hold off on the latter until the final season, as it has significant consequences for the whole series.
Even if those weren’t the specific events Ryan Condal mentioned, season three of House of the Dragon still looks promising for fans.
