House of the Dragon season 3 begins preproduction this October

As a diehard fan who’s been through the trials and tribulations of waiting for the next installment of my beloved series, I can’t help but feel a mix of anticipation and dread as we approach yet another multi-year hiatus from Westeros. Two years between seasons? That’s practically an eternity in the realm of television! Yet, here we are, once again, navigating the labyrinthine politics and dragons of George R.R. Martin’s world with nary a new episode in sight.

The closing moments of the second season of “House of the Dragon” occurred earlier this month, featuring a series of armies and fleets en route to conflict. However, spectators must be patient as it might take some time before these forces collide. Similar to how we experienced a two-year gap between seasons one and two of this “Game of Thrones” prequel series, there’s a strong possibility that season 3 will follow suit with a similar delay.

Based on the Production List, a well-respected industry publication that tracks filming dates for significant TV shows and movies, it appears that the preproduction phase for House of the Dragon season 3 will commence on October 31, 2024. In other words, production on the third season of House of the Dragon will kick off on Halloween. Should we be excited or apprehensive?

The given date seems to be an approximate one, and it might change. According to showrunner Ryan Condal, filming could start as early as the beginning of 2025. Based on our estimates, you can anticipate watching new episodes in 2026.

We’ll return to Westeros in 2025, but won’t see new episodes of House of the Dragon until 2026

In today’s era of costly dramas packed with special effects, it has become customary for viewers to endure lengthy gaps between new television seasons. This trend can arguably be traced back to the popular series “Game of Thrones,” as HBO only released one season annually for the first seven seasons. However, due to the complexity of the eighth and final seasons, a gap of two years was necessary, providing the cast and crew with ample time to ensure the finale was memorable. (It’s worth noting that this delay coincided with a surge of criticism from fans; while it’s not a flawless approach, it’s evidently not a perfect system either.)

HBO is unable to speed up the release of new seasons for “House of the Dragon,” but they’re offering solace to fans by introducing a fresh “Game of Thrones” prequel series: “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.” This show, based on George R.R. Martin’s “Dunk & Egg” novellas, will be set in an era that falls between “House of the Dragon” and “Game of Thrones,” approximately four decades apart from both. The project is smaller in scale and slated for release in 2025, offering a potential solution to bridge the waiting period.
