House of the Dragon killing off Sunfyre would majorly impact future events in a negative way

As a devoted fan with an encyclopedic memory of Westeros and a penchant for prophecies, I must express my reservations about the fate of Sunfyre in the upcoming season of House of the Dragon. The finale left me feeling as cold as the North during winter, with more questions than answers about our beloved dragon.

Moving on from the second installment of “House of the Dragon,” we find ourselves pondering the events that will unfold in the impending conflict. I believe I echo the sentiments of many fans when I say the finale seemed somewhat lackluster, even disappointingly so, given the multitude of storylines it set up but failed to resolve satisfactorily.

However, isn’t it possible that he’s merely mistaken? After all, readers of the book are aware that Sunfyre cannot perish prior to a crucial event in the narrative, which makes this turn of events quite disconcerting. In the finale of season 2, Aegon asserts to Larys that Sunfyre is no more. Yet, one might wonder if he’s merely under the impression, not fact. Was anyone present to confirm the dragon’s demise? At this juncture, we’re uncertain, but we do understand that such a transformation could prove detrimental. Let’s delve into the reasons why.

WARNING: Major spoilers for Fire & Blood are below

In “Fire & Blood” and “House of the Dragon,” Sunfyre suffers an attack during the Battle at Rook’s Rest. His wing is torn, causing him to remain there for healing. Aegon too gets severely injured and returns to King’s Landing. The reunion between dragon and rider occurs much later in the narrative when Sunfyre flies to Dragonstone, where a wounded Aegon has sought refuge. At this fortress, Aegon gains an advantage over Rhaenyra. Eventually, Sunfyre sets Rhaenyra on fire and consumes her remains. Indeed, it’s quite a remarkable turn of events! That’s why we need Sunfyre to survive throughout the story.

It could very well be that Aegon, along with readers who haven’t read the books, believe Sunfyre is deceased for dramatic purposes. This would make his reappearance at Dragonstone all the more shocking. However, it’s important to mention that Sunfyre survived the Battle at Rook’s Rest in the book, and Criston’s men have been taking care of him. So, it seems unlikely that Aegon is unaware of this. After the event at Walys Mooton’s army, Sunfyre participates in another significant incident, attacking as they tried to reclaim Rook’s Rest for Rhaenyra. It isn’t until after this that Sunfyre goes into hiding.

As a devoted fan, I find myself both excited and wary about potential changes regarding Rhaenyra’s death in House of the Dragon. The writers have certainly served up some captivating new storylines throughout seasons 1 and 2, but there have also been instances where alterations didn’t quite hit the mark. Redesigning Rhaenyra’s demise is a bold move, one that could go either way. With such a pivotal character, it seems plausible that they would want to prolong her presence as much as possible. Time will tell how this unfolds!

As someone who loves reading books, it’s frustrating not knowing the outcomes before the third season starts, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the series will satisfy us in its remaining episodes. In fact, House of the Dragon has been renewed for a third season and even more excitingly, showrunner Ryan Condal has announced that the fourth will be their final one.
