House of the Dragon, Game of Thrones showrunners all make list of Hollywood’s most powerful TV producers
As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for the dramatic and the fantastical, I must say that the latest Hollywood Reporter list of the 50 most powerful TV producers has truly piqued my interest. The names on this list read like a who’s who of contemporary television, from Lauren LeFranc, the mastermind behind HBO’s captivating The Penguin, to Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, who have made waves with their exceptional work on Shōgun.
2024 saw the unveiling of The Hollywood Reporter’s list showcasing the 50 most influential TV producers in Tinseltown. Familiar faces grace this prestigious roster, such as Lauren LeFranc, renowned for her work on HBO’s popular series The Penguin; Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, whose masterpiece Shōgun was arguably the best show of the year; and Ryan Murphy, who continues to impress with successful shows like Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey.
Additionally, on the same list are three creators who have worked on series within HBO’s Game of Thrones empire: starting with Ryan Condal, currently spearheading the prequel show House of the Dragon. He shared some wisdom for his younger self: “Don’t worry so much. It’ll work out. Be more carefree. Celebrate the small successes. Travel. Write additional scripts.” When asked about overcoming writer’s block, he quipped, “With 2,500 crew members watching me.
Condal and his crew have drawn flak from author George R.R. Martin, whose work serves as a foundation for the series “House of the Dragon.” It remains to be seen if this disagreement materializes when season three of “House of the Dragon” premieres in 2026. Meanwhile, the duo, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who were at the helm of the original “Game of Thrones,” have shifted their focus to the Netflix sci-fi drama “3 Body Problem,” along with Alexander Woo. The trio has also been mentioned in some circles. They shared what they last watched that left them feeling envious, and their answers ranged quite broadly.
Weiss “The White Lotus”
Benioff “Blue Eye Samurai”
Woo “Taskmaster”
If the upcoming season of “Three Body Problem” incorporates daily life drama set at a resort, samurai combat scenes, or celebrities engaging in silly activities, it becomes clear that these elements were intentionally included.
Benioff and Weiss declined a producer credit for House of the Dragon, indicating they’ve left Westeros behind. Next year, a new Game of Thrones prequel titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere on HBO. It remains to be seen if showrunner Ira Parker will be part of future successes by then.
