House of the Dragon boss teases "total war" in season 3...for real this time, maybe

As a gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the second season of House of the Dragon left me feeling like a character stuck in a never-ending grind. The slow pace and lack of the promised fire and blood were reminiscent of those tedious MMO quests where all you do is fetch items for a villager who’s been waiting since the last expansion.

In the final episode of House of the Dragon, Rhaenyra Targaryen discovered the tragic news of her son Luke’s death, a victim of her nephew Aemond. Overwhelmed by sorrow, she stands up with anger gleaming in her eyes, causing fans to gasp collectively as they eagerly awaited the explosive events promised in the upcoming second season.

In contrast to the high anticipation, when season 2 arrived, the pace was significantly slower than anticipated. Instead of portraying a vengeful goddess, Rhaenyra spent most of her time worrying about limiting collateral damage. The only significant conflict between the greens and blacks in season 2 was the Battle of Rook’s Rest. As the season progressed, it became even more sluggish, with the finale consisting mainly of images of armies marching and navies moving, yet none of them clashed. After such a long wait for war, it felt disappointing.

In an Inside the Episode discussion, showrunner Ryan Condal hinted that while this season focused on the initial phases and pauses of a medieval conflict, it’s evident that season 3 will delve into the concept of full-scale war.

Oh, is it indeed, Ryan? I assumed it would undoubtedly revolve around total war, as that’s what I had anticipated for the season. So, please understand my hesitation and doubt.

Hey there fellow gamer! As a fan of “House of the Dragon,” I have to admit, I felt like the second season was stretched out a bit more than needed. From what I’ve gathered, there were some major events slated for the end of season 2 that got pushed back to season 3 instead. After watching the finale, it all seems to make sense now.

Aemond will be a “loose canon” in House of the Dragon season 3

Regarding Season 3 developments, some insights were shared about Aemond Targaryen, currently serving as king regent in the Seven Kingdoms and exhibiting signs of psychopathy. He possesses the largest living dragon and found himself cornered in the season finale, which raises concerns for the realm’s stability. As Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond, puts it, “A desperate Aemond is a dangerous Aemond.” Producer Sara Hess hints that Aemond will be an unpredictable wild card, or in her words, an “interesting loose canon.”

As a diehard fan, I can’t help but remind myself that there’s another potential ruler on the horizon: King Aegon Targaryen, secretly smuggled out of King’s Landing by his Master of Whisperers, Larys Strong. And as Tom Glynn-Carney hinted, things could take an unexpected turn in a heartbeat.

Odds are we won’t be watching the third season of House of the Dragon until sometime in 2026.
