House of the Dragon boss explains why Daenerys (but not Jon Snow) shows up in Daemon’s vision
As a seasoned gamer and ardent fan of George R.R. Martin’s universe, I’ve spent countless hours debating theories, analyzing prophecies, and strategizing battles in Westeros. The finale of House of the Dragon left me intrigued, to say the least. The appearance of Daenerys Targaryen, a character yet to be born in the timeline of the series, was a mind-boggling twist that sent ripples through the fandom.
In the final episode of “House of the Dragon” season 2, titled “The Queen Who Ever Was,” an unexpected cameo occurred featuring Daenerys Targaryen, a renowned character from “Game of Thrones,” portrayed by Emilia Clarke (and by Imogen Ruby Little in the prequel series). Interestingly, Daenerys, who won’t be born for over a century, appeared to Daemon Targaryen in a vision. This vision also hinted at the war against the White Walkers, an event that lies far in the future as well.

In simpler terms, Ryan Condal, the showrunner of “House of the Dragon,” said that since it’s a prequel to one of television’s most legendary stories, there should be some connections between the two. Since no characters from our time period appear in the later series, they were always searching for ways to link the two stories together. This information was shared with reporters by Entertainment Weekly.
In essence, Daemon is witnessing a vision that Aegon the Conqueror experienced more than a century past; it’s the same vision that was passed down from ruler to ruler until King Viserys revealed it in the series premiere to Rhaenyra. Later on, Rhaenyra shared this prophecy, famously known as the Song of Ice and Fire, with her own son and heir, Jace.
According to the prophecy from A Song of Ice and Fire, a Targaryen must rule over the Seven Kingdoms when the White Walkers arrive for humanity to stand a chance at survival. However, since George R.R. Martin has not yet concluded his series, there’s much speculation about who this Targaryen – often referred to as the Promised Prince or the Chosen One – might be. Some believe it could be Daenerys, while others think it’s Jon Snow. Given Martin’s penchant for complexity, we can expect that the answer will likely prove more intricate than these simple choices suggest.
Despite some fans believing Jon is the Chosen One, they were puzzled as to why Daenerys, not him, appeared in Daemon’s vision. Condal clarifies that while they aren’t trying to decipher any prophecy, it’s up to George R.R. Martin to do so. Instead, they focus on the character dynamics surrounding this intriguing imagery.
We know Rhaenyra is already kind of running with this idea of the Prince Who Was Promised. If Daemon also believes that that is Rhaenyra, as we’ve seen him say to her in High Valyrian in [the finale], there’s a very interesting thing that can be done with his interpretation of that reality as we move forward. So for that reason, I think it was important that it was Daenerys, the image.
In simpler terms, it seems unclear as to why Daemon appears to Daenerys instead of Jon in those strange visions from the tree. After all, no one, including myself, truly understands how these visions work, not even George R.R. Martin himself. So, I can’t really dictate who should or shouldn’t appear in them.
My concern is more than Daemon could become a duller character now that he’s motivated by these visions from outside the story rather than anything internal, but I guess I’ll have to wait for season 3 to see what happens. See you in 2026.
