After an extensive search for a director for Hot Wheels, it seems like the project has finally found some skilled personnel involved, and I believe this choice is quite fitting.

According to a recent report by Deadline, Jon M. Chu, renowned for his work on the “Wicked” movies and “Crazy Rich Asians,” has officially joined the team for the “Hot Wheels” project. Following the immense success of “Wicked” in the fall, there was a surge of interest in collaborating with Chu, propelling him to the level of top-tier filmmaker. Known for his ability to create blockbuster hits that are visually stunning and excel at world building, he appears to have a knack for large-scale, flashy spectacles. This unique skill set makes him an ideal choice for “Hot Wheels,” as the project will need to construct its own distinct universe much like “Barbie” did. In a statement, Chu expressed:

Alongside Chu, Juel Taylor, and Tony Rettenmaier, known for movies like “Creed II” and “They Cloned Tyrone”, have been selected to draft the script. It appears that some talented individuals from the “Star Wars” universe are involved in “Hot Wheels” too, with J.J. Abrams named as a producer through his production company, “Bad Robot”. Additionally, production will take place under Warner Brothers, who have a collaborative relationship with Mattel and seem optimistic about bringing the “Hot Wheels” universe to reality.

It’s currently being marketed that Hot Wheels will be presented as an action-packed film, which aligns well with how the product has been promoted in the past. Action racing films have a history of providing an adrenaline rush, as exemplified by the Fast and Furious series.
