Horror’s Greatest, In a Violent Nature, and everything coming to Shudder in September
As a seasoned horror aficionado with decades of spine-tingling experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that this lineup is nothing short of a chilling symphony of terror. From the Down Under shivers of “The Demon Disorder” to the Americana frightfest of “Popcorn”, each film promises a unique, heart-pounding journey into the dark recesses of the human psyche.
As a self-proclaimed Halloween enthusiast, let’s just say we can all concur: September undeniably marks the beginning of the spooktacular season! Although some of us might start celebrating a tad earlier, like straight after the Fourth of July, most would agree that September truly sets the stage. And if the chilling anticipation at Shudder is anything to go by, it’s clear that they too are ramping up for Halloween, and their September lineup certainly echoes that excitement.
Starting in September, Shudder has planned to debut three unique original movies, an exclusive series, as well as “The Last Drive-In: Nightmareathon” and weekly watch parties every Friday evening. Here’s a peek into what you can expect from Shudder in September!
September 1:
Get ready for the grand finale of The Last Drive-In’s sixth season with Joe Bob Briggs, Darcy, Yuki, John Brennan and the whole team! This special extended episode, debuting on August 30, will also be available to stream starting September 1. Packed with six spine-tingling films that are still under wraps!
Salem’s Lot – Originating from Stephen King’s novel, this story about vampires in a small town has been turned into two miniseries. The initial adaptation was extended into a full-length movie, and it’s the one you can stream on Shudder starting in September.
In the memorable 1992 movie titled “Candyman,” a student conducting research on urban legends stumbles upon the tale of Candyman. This terrifying figure is believed to manifest whenever his name is uttered five times while standing before a mirror. However, it’s best not to test this theory as he is known for causing gruesome deaths.
A Frightening Night at the Carnival Fun House – After enjoying an evening at the neighborhood carnival, a group of youths impulsively decide to enter the fun house after hours. Regrettably, they discover that a grotesquely masked murderer is lurking within the dimly lit attraction.
The Hidden Tenants Beneath the Steps – This horror film, penned and helmed by Wes Craven, follows the story of a young boy named Fool. He’s persuaded by a pair of thieves to assist them in breaking into their landlord’s residence. Upon entering, they stumble upon children who have been mistreated and confined, and they must devise a plan to escape unscathed.
In a Twist of Fate – I found myself stunned as serial killer Horace Pinker, who claimed over thirty lives before his capture, was no ordinary criminal. Even after his execution in the electric chair, this guy managed to come back, all thanks to a pact he struck with the devil himself. Now, I can’t help but wonder what other secrets this world holds!
September 2:
Duane was born as twins with his severely deformed brother Belial, joined at birth. They were surgically separated, leaving both of them discontented. Duane conceals Belial in a large basket. In unison, the siblings plot revenge against the surgeons who performed their separation.
September 3:
Titled “Horror’s Greatest: Unveiled” (an original series on Shudder), the first segment of this captivating series is set to premiere on August 27, with subsequent episodes released every Tuesday up until September 24. This riveting show delves into the minds of horror-focused actors, directors, musicians, special effects artists, and writers, as they share their insights and expertise on various aspects of the horror genre. Topics discussed will range from common themes, sub-genres, and even foreign horror films.
September 6:
“The Haunting of the Brothers” (Shudder Original) – In this chilling Australian production, Graham receives an unexpected call from his long-lost sibling Jake. He alleges that their brother Phillip is being haunted by their late father, a troubling assertion. The two brothers decide to unite and confront the vengeful specter together.
September 7:
Titled “All You Need is Fate,” this story follows a youthful pair who unknowingly find themselves in perilous circumstances after accidentally capturing a haunting old tune.
September 9:
In this much-loved classic, college students plan an exciting horror movie marathon in the deserted Dreamland theater. However, they soon discover that the task is riskier than anticipated, as a deranged killer begins targeting the event’s planners.
Blue Sunshine – In Los Angeles, some bizarre murders are occurring where individuals inexplicably go mad and lose their hair. When Jerry finds himself falsely accused, he flees to unravel the mystery. Could it be Blue Sunshine LSD, a drug that these killers apparently consumed ten years ago? (In this version, I’ve aimed for a more conversational tone and expanded on the context slightly.)
As a thrill-seeker, I found myself drawn into the heart-stopping tale of “The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue.” In this chilling narrative, I was not just a passive observer, but a law enforcer on a relentless pursuit. Two counterculture figures, the hippies, were my prime suspects in a string of brutal slayings that echoed the infamous Manson family crimes. Little did I know, the true villains lurking in the shadows were not of this world – they were the undead, resurrected and hungry for human flesh.
September 13:
In “In a Violent Nature” (a film on Shudder), a corpse of a man named Johnny has lain entombed within a fallen fire tower in the heart of the forest for six decades. This desolate spot, guarded by an enigmatic locket, holds him captive. When the locket is taken, Johnny miraculously returns to life, intent on avenging his death by slaying the youths who unjustly claimed it.
September 23:
As an avid traveler, I found myself in the heart of Serbia, my friend and I strapped for cash, making our way as best copywriters could on vacation. A local character, self-proclaimed as St. Peter, approached us offering his guide services. The sightseeing he led us through initially felt charming, but soon took a sinister turn, leaving us in a web of unease and potential danger.
September 27:
The Mysterious House in the Countryside (Shudder Original Film) – Ted and his wife Dani are transforming a rural home when Dani meets an untimely death. Despite the general belief that a patient from a psychiatric facility was the culprit, who later turns out to be deceased, Dani’s blind sister Darcy arrives a year later with a mission: uncover the truth using artifacts she has gathered for her collection of supposedly cursed objects.
On Fridays at 9:00 p.m. ET, I’m thrilled to join the Shudder TV watch party! Every gathering promises a double bill of spine-tingling treats for us horror enthusiasts.
