Horizon Part 1, Land of Bad on Netflix, and every new movie this week

As a film critic with a deep appreciation for poignant dramas that tug at the heartstrings, I was drawn to Tuesday, a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant film that explores the depths of love, loss, and the fragility of life. With Julia Louis-Dreyfus delivering a powerful performance as Zora, the doting mother facing the impending death of her ailing daughter Tuesday, I found myself utterly captivated by this moving tale.

If you’re in search of a thought-provoking war film that delves into the significance of conflict or questions the genre, I would suggest looking elsewhere. However, if a military thriller with intense action sequences, an excellent ensemble cast, and authentic character development is more to your liking, then by all means, give “Land of Bad” a try.

New on Disney Plus

Young Woman and the Sea

Where to watch: Available to stream on Disney Plus

Horizon Part 1, Land of Bad on Netflix, and every new movie this week

As a gamer, I’d describe it like this: I once came across a biographical sports drama that ran for approximately 2 hours and 9 minutes. This intriguing film was directed by the talented Joachim Rønning. The star-studded cast included Daisy Ridley, Tilda Cobham-Hervey, and Stephen Graham. As I immersed myself in the game of watching this movie, these three actors brought the story to life in an engaging and captivating way.

In “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Daisy Ridley portrays Gertrude Ederle, who became the first woman to swim the 21-mile English Channel in 1926. Preparing rigorously for this monumental task, she is guided by her mentor Jabez Wolffe, played by Christopher Eccleston. Remarkably, the historical Gertrude had previously earned an Olympic medal in the 1924 4×100 meter freestyle relay! That’s impressive!

New on Peacock

Abigail

Where to watch: Available to stream on Peacock

Horizon Part 1, Land of Bad on Netflix, and every new movie this week

Category: Horror-Comedy
Duration: 1 hour and 49 minutes
Directors: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
Actors: Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens, Kathryn Newton

Two directors known for “Ready or Not” (2019) and “Scream” (2022) are back with a new horror comedy. In this story, a gang of kidnappers intends to abduct the daughter of a wealthy businessman to demand ransom. However, they underestimated their target – this young girl holds a lethal secret within herself.

From our review:

After Abigail is unmasked as a lethal supernatural being, the film shifts towards an intense action-horror experience instead of focusing on scares. This makes “Abigail” resemble Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett’s previous work, “Ready or Not,” more than any other vampire movie. Both films primarily take place in fortified mansions where someone is mercilessly pursued with a mix of dark humor. Additionally, both movies delight in the gory spectacle of blood and gore. Following their brief stints on the disorganized and chaotic “Scream” sequels, “Abigail” demonstrates that Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett excel at generating suspense within sprawling mansions and transitioning horror into action swiftly.

Viggo Mortensen joins Kevin Costner in releasing a new Western this week with the film “The Dead Don’t Hurt.” In it, Mortensen portrays Holger Olsen, who comes back from the Civil War and tries to start a life with his lover Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps). However, Holger is deeply affected by his wartime experiences and must face the reality that both he and Vivienne have transformed in a harsh environment where violence and riches rule.

Thelma

Where to watch: Available to rent on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu

Horizon Part 1, Land of Bad on Netflix, and every new movie this week

Genre: This film is an action comedy.

Thelma is a revenge story where an elderly woman, at the age of 93, sets out in Los Angeles to retrieve what was stolen from her. A significant portion of this journey is completed using a mobility scooter designed for seniors.

From our review:

During a Mission: Impossible film viewing, Thelma is influenced not only by Tom Cruise’s spirit but also by his character in the movie’s script. Following her scam experience, it’s Tom Cruise’s image on a magazine that motivates Thelma to pursue justice personally. However, this authenticity wouldn’t be effective without Thelma’s outstanding and dedicated portrayals, particularly from Squibb and Roundtree. These two actors deliver brilliantly comical performances, with Roundtree’s charisma adding a significant emotional depth to the film. According to Margolin, Squibb was determined to embody Tom Cruise’s role and execute as many stunts as possible herself.

Uncommon for a summer blockbuster to be both hilarious and heartwarming, but Thelma achieves this unique combination. If you’re missing Tom Cruise’s presence at cinemas this year, fear not – Thelma and June Squibb are more than capable of filling the void.
