Hoodoo Gurus Devastated as Founding Guitarist Kimble Rendall Dies Days After Former Manager

The iconic Australian rock band, Hoodoo Gurus, are devastated following the passing of founding member Kimble Rendall, who sadly joined their former manager in death mere days ago.

The ARIA Hall of Fame recipients posted on Facebook to announce the death of their original guitarist, Kimble, who passed away at the age of 71 on Saturday.

‘Kimble has passed away, bringing great sadness. This tragic news was shared last night, accompanied by a touching old photograph of him strumming a guitar in a recording studio.’

‘Two losses we have had in the Gurus family this past week. We’re still reeling from the shock.’

Initially serving as the lead guitarist for the band from 1981 to 1982 (hailing from Sydney), he chose to depart from them at the brink of their breakthrough, pursuing a career in filmmaking instead.

In time, he achieved significant acclaim as one of Australia’s distinguished film directors, boasting a resume that includes the 2000 horror film “Cut,” featuring Kylie Minogue and Molly Ringwald in leading roles.

Kimble also directed Julian McMahon and Lincoln Lewis in the 2012 shark horror movie Bait.

The last film he directed was “Guardians of the Tomb,” a joint Australian-Chinese production from 2018. This movie featured Kelsey Grammer and Li Bingbing in the lead roles.

Apart from leading his old band, Kimble additionally created music videos, a task he undertook not only for them but also for some renowned Australian rock legends such as Cold Chisel, Mental As Anything, and Diesel.

Apart from his main roles, he had the additional task as a secondary director for numerous high-profile Hollywood films shot in Australia, such as The Matrix Reloaded, Ghost Rider, and I, Robot.

His death was announced by media personality Melissa Hoyer on social media.

‘Kimble Rendall, our cherished musician, ad agency genius, filmmaker, loving husband, dedicated father, and dear friend to countless others, has passed away.’ (She started by saying)

I’m truly grateful for the presence you’ve had in my life. Your kindness, empathy, and compassion never ceased to amaze me. The spark of creativity that you carried was always evident, bringing laughter and amusement wherever you went. Your wit and intellect were admirable, consistently impressing those around you. Above all, your ability to entertain and bring joy has left an indelible mark on my heart.

He had been wedded to the long-time Australian television host Basia Bonkowski from 1982 until her demise due to lymphoma in 2022.

Kimble is survived by their children William and Camille.

His demise occurred not long after the death of Dominic ‘Mick’ Mazzone, a past Hoodoo Gurus manager, who succumbed to an illness.

Last week, the band paid a touching homage on social media to their dear friend, Mick, who was an esteemed figure in the music industry.

As a dedicated lifestyle enthusiast, I’m deeply saddened to express my personal heartbreak over the unexpected departure of my cherished companion, Mick (Dominic) Mazzone. This sentiment is shared within our Hoodoo Gurus family, as we grapple with this profound loss.

Expressing the depth of our sorrow and astonishment at this moment is a challenging task. Tears have been shed abundantly, and it seems an endless stream of them may continue to flow.

The loss we’re experiencing pales in comparison to what Mick’s immediate family and closest companions, particularly his cherished children, Frank, Antonia, and Alex, are going through.

‘Our hearts go out to them at this dreadful time. Love, Brad, Dave, Rick & Nik.’
