Honkai: Star Rail Harbinger of Death Swarm Nightmare Boss Guide: Boss Mechanism
This boss in Honkai Star Rail is challenging, featuring high damage reduction and frequently summoning allies. Here’s a breakdown of how the boss works:

Skills
| Skills | Effects |
|---|---|
| Rend, Putrefy, Engorge | After using this skill boss will enter a state called Gene Duplication, which will increase all boss-summoned allies’ speed. Additionally, the boss will summon Juvenile Sting, and they will enter a Rapid Evolution state. In this state, you have to select one character from your team whose Break damage will increase, and only your selected character can deal CD, but other characters’ CD will be restricted by the boss. That’s why always select a team which don’t deal damage from crit hits or always select your main DPS for more damage. It’s the trickiest skill of this boss. |
| Primordial Tide, Swarm of Death | The boss will deal a massive Fire DMG equal to the boss’s (300% ATK) to all of your allied characters. It’s the most dangerous skill that will deal massive damage to your team. |
| Malignform Elytra, Rapacious Appendages, Encroach, Mangle, Sate | Malignform Elytra, Rapacious Appendages, Encroach, and Mangle Sate are 3 different skills that deal minor fire damage to one of your designated characters. |
| Primal Hunger | This skill increases the SPD of all summoned Juvenile Sting by 20 for 2 rounds. |
| Whirling Carapace | In this state, if you attack the boss, then a portion of its reduced HP is converted into Corrosion. However, if the boss uses the Primordial Tide, Swarm of Death skill in this state, then the boss will recover HP based on the Corrosion amount. That’s why always try to finish the battle as soon as possible; otherwise boss will recover HP and will also deal massive damage to all of your characters. |
| Symbiosis, Swarm, Gnaw | After defeating all summoned Juvenile Sting Boss Gene Duplication and Corrosion state will be dispelled, and the boss will receive increased DMG. |
| Universal Blight, Howl of the Life Eater | When Juvenile Sting attacks any character, the Boss gains a stack called Mortal Instinct. When Mortal Instinct reaches a certain number of stacks boss will take action. The boss will use Primordial Tide, Swarm of Death, and all Mortal Instinct will be gone. Furthermore, Juvenile Sting will prioritize attacking your selected character. That’s why you always use a healer or a shielder in our team for survival; your main damage dealer will die because of constant attacks. |
Damage Res and Debuff Res
Understanding your opponent is key, and this boss is no exception. It’s very durable and strongly resists Ice, Lightning, Imaginary, and Quantum attacks – specifically, it has a 20% resistance to those types. However, it’s considerably weaker against Fire, Wind, and standard Physical attacks.

It also has 50% resistance to control effects. Players will need to carefully plan and change their strategies to defeat this powerful Boss.

Honkai: Star Rail Harbinger of Death Swarm Nightmare Boss Guide: Best Teams
Here are my picks for the best teams:
| Teams | Character 1 | Character 2 | Character 3 | Character 4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Firefly Break Team | Firefly | Dahlia | Fugue/Ruan Mei/ Harmony Trailblazer | Lingsha/Gallagher |
| Phainon Hypercarry | Phainon | Sunday/Broynya | Cerydra | Dan Heng Permansor Terrae |
| Anaxa Hypercarry | Anaxa | Cerydra | Cyrene | Dan Heng Permansor Terrae |
While several teams can defeat this boss, the Firefly Break team is particularly effective against the Harbinger of Death. This is due to a special bonus the boss provides that benefits this team.
How to beat Harbinger of Death Swarm Nightmare Boss
We’ve analyzed how this boss works and identified the most effective team compositions to fight it. To succeed, it’s important to stick to a few key strategies and manage your team’s abilities effectively. Here’s a breakdown of the rules to follow when taking on this boss:

- If you don’t have the recommended team mentioned above, then always try to use a Path of Erudition or Destruction-type DPS character, so that you can attack multiple enemies at once.
- After the boss summons its Juvenile Sting, try to beat those summoning creatures first; otherwise, the boss will heal itself with the Whirling Carapace skill.
- Always use a healer or shielder on your DPS first because of the boss Universal Blight, Howl of the Life Eater skill. Juvenile Sting will always attack your selected DPS character first.
- Save your healing for the Primordial Tide, Swarm of Death attack, because of its massive AOE fire damage, all of your characters will lose a huge amount of HP. You can also use Shields, so that your characters don’t lose a huge amount of their HP.
With a little practice and these key strategies, you’ll be able to beat this boss easily. Plus, you’ll unlock two new achievements when you do!
