The upcoming Version 3.2 update for Honkai: Star Rail introduces the highly-awaited 5-star character, Castorice. Castorice, being a Quantum character, follows the Path of Remembrance. This comprehensive guide on using Castorice in Honkai: Star Rail provides an in-depth analysis of her abilities and suggests optimal configurations to maximize her potential.
Castorice Gameplay
Castorice is the initial Quantum Recall entity, and she’s primarily focused on summoning her powerful ally, Netherwing, to deal with enemies. You can think of her as a DPS character who doesn’t only inflict damage herself but also brings in a massive dragon to carry out the main attacks!

Initially, her character attributes are quite intriguing. She boasts the highest initial health points in the game, surpassing Mydei’s, but her other stats aren’t crucial. When developing her, prioritize enhancing her Memosprite Skill and Talent initially, followed by her Ultimate and Talent. Her basic attack can be overlooked as she doesn’t heavily depend on it.
Skill
In Castorice’s case, her ability is crucial. Typically, she uses up 30% of all active team members’ current health points to unleash a blast attack and charge her ultimate. However, when Netherwing is present, her skill undergoes an upgrade – it transforms into an Area-of-Effect Joint Attack (similar to Aglaea’s) and consumes 40% of the allies’ health points to heal Netherwing instead. Essentially, you’re sacrificing your team’s health for Netherwing to keep breathing fire!

Netherwing itself has two attacks:
- Claw Attack – A simple AoE hit.
- Scorch Breath – The real star. It eats 25% of Netherwing’s max HP to deal huge AoE damage, and each consecutive breath gets stronger. If Netherwing drops below 25% HP, its final breath reduces it to 1 HP and triggers a massive multi-hit bounce attack.
The strategy lies in maintaining Netherwing’s health: aim to sustain it so it can discharge several breaths. Utilizing Castorice’s ability and team healing to rejuvenate Netherwing is crucial. Once Netherwing departs (either after 3 rounds or when its health drops to 1), it rewards your team with a healing boost as a token of gratitude for the health you sacrificed.
Ultimate
Currently, the main attraction is not just any ordinary summon but rather the extraordinary “Netherwing” dragon. Unlike other summons that linger permanently, this one appears and disappears when summoned by using Castorice’s “Ultimate”. This action also expands the surroundings into an intriguing area known as the “Lost Netherland”.
The real show-stealer isn’t your typical summon; it’s the magical dragon called Netherwing. Unlike other summons that stay forever, Netherwing comes and goes when you use Castorice’s special move, which also creates a unique and mysterious place called Lost Netherland.
Within this realm, adversaries suffer a 20% reduction across all RES categories, making them sustain significantly more damage. The Netherwing entity boasts an impressive speed of 165 and a colossal health pool of 34,000 HP, equivalent to Castorice’s maximum Newbud energy level.
How do you prepare your Ultimate for summoning Netherwing? That’s what Newbud is for. Newbud represents Castorice’s unique energy source, similar to how Feixiao and Acheron each have their own resources. You can fill it up in two different ways:

- Allies losing HP – Every point of HP lost by your team gives 1 Newbud point.
- Allies getting healed – Her Ascension 2 passive converts healing into Newbud, but only up to 12% of the max per ally (so 4,080 per heal).
When Netherwing is brought into play, the dynamics shift. Instead of accumulating Newbud, any health loss or healing from allies now serves to reinforce Netherwing. This is crucial because Netherwing’s most potent attack, Scorch Breath, depletes its own health to unleash heavy damage. The more health it possesses, the more times it can employ this attack before detonating in a climactic, highly destructive burst.
Talent and Technique
Castorice also has some neat extras:
- Technique – Let’s her start battle with Netherwing already summoned (saving you from charging Newbud).
- Global Passive – A one-time “delay death” effect for allies, giving them a second chance if they’re healed or shielded fast enough.
- Self-Buffs – She gets DMG boosts when allies lose HP, 40% SPD when above half HP, and Netherwing gets extra SPD if it wipes out a wave of enemies.

Honkai Star Rail Castorice Best Relics and Planar Ornaments
When selecting items for Castorice, prioritize enhancing her attack power and resilience. In this part of the Honkai: Star Rail Castorice Build Guide, we will explore which relics, key attributes, and planar ornaments are crucial for optimizing Castorice’s performance.

- Body (Crit DMG%>HP)
- Feet (HP)
- Planar Spear (HP> DMG)
- Link Rope (HP)
Relic Set
Poet of Mourning Collapse | This set is made for Castorice as the 4-piece set is powerful for her. It gives her 32% Crit Rate and 10% extra DMG, which is huge for her damage output. Normally, this set would slow her down since it requires her to have less than 135 SPD, but Castorice cheats this with her passive—when her HP is above 50%, she gets +40% SPD, letting her stay fast and keep the full Poet set bonus |
Scholar Lost in Erudition/Longevous Disciple | They’re okay, but they just can’t compete with the raw power of the full Poet set. |
Planar Ornaments
Firmament Frontline: Glamoth | If you can hit the SPD thresholds |
Talia: Kingdom of Banditry | If you’re running Break Effect, though, this is niche |
Sprightly Vonwacq | If you want early Ultimates |
Honkai Star Rail Castorice Best Light Cone
Castorice can be challenging in free-to-play (F2P) gameplay as many of her 4-Stars and 3-Stars Light Cones don’t complement her kit effectively, unlike some other DPS characters. Since she doesn’t have a strong F2P alternative, it’s strongly advised to pull for her signature Light Cone if you aim to optimize her performance.

Make Farewells More Beautiful (Castorice 5* Light Cone) | Her best-in-slot weapon is hands-down her signature Light Cone, “Netherwing’s Oath” (S1). This thing is tailor-made for her, packing a ton of base HP to make Netherwing hit harder, a max HP% buff to push her damage even further, and a massive 30% DEF Ignore that boosts all her attacks, including her dragon’s. On top of that, it gives her Advance Forward when Netherwing dies, which helps fix her otherwise sluggish speed. The difference between this and the next-best option is huge—we’re talking about a 44% damage increase. If you’re serious about using her, this is the Light Cone to go for. |
Sweat Now, Cry Less (4*) | The next best choice is the Battle Pass Light Cone, “Sweat Now, Cry Less.” This one gives a solid 24% Crit DMG boost and has high base HP, which helps with Netherwing’s scaling. The catch? If you’re already stacking tons of Crit Rate (from her Poet relic set, traces, or supports), you might end up overcapping (going past 100% Crit Rate), which wastes stats. It’s still a strong option, but it’s not quite as good as her signature. |
For optimal performance with Castorice, choose her signature S1 Light Cone weapon. If that’s unavailable, the Battle Pass Light Cone is a reasonable substitute. In case of resource limitations, prioritize high base HP for any weapon you equip her with. It’s not perfect, but it’s superior to nothing at all.
Best Team Comps for Castorice in Honkai Star Rail
Best Sustainers for Castorice
Castorice performs optimally in teams capable of accommodating her distinctive game strategy, which primarily involves consistently depleting and restoring the health points (HP) of her team members to power up her ultimate ability and ensure that her dragon, Netherwing, remains engaged in combat.
Given that her combat equipment relies heavily on health changes, the most suitable support characters for her are Gallagher and Luocha. Gallagher is particularly effective due to his ability to heal on attack. This means that every time an ally strikes an enemy, whether it’s through basic attacks, skills, or follow-ups, the team benefits from a healing surge, which in turn provides more energy for Castorice.
Luocha is a great alternative due to his self-healing field that consistently restores HP, keeping your energy production steady and dependable. Compared to healers such as Bailu or Lynx, he’s more efficient because he uses instant healing instead of turn-based recovery, which can slow down Castorice’s energy accumulation.
Best Supports for Castorice
Castorice works exceptionally well with characters who either boost her damage output or attack frequently to trigger additional healing. Among all the supports, Tribbie stands out as the most effective one for Castorice. This is due to Tribbie providing universal buffs without any downtime, attacking often through follow-ups, and possessing Quantum synergy for breaking shields.
At stage E1, Tribbie gains additional strength, significantly increasing Castorice’s single-target damage output. Another effective choice is the Rememberance MC (RMC), which comes at no cost and offers several advantages. The summoned memosprite by RMC acts as an extra ally for healing purposes and energy consumption, making them particularly potent in Pure Fiction. Furthermore, their frequent attacks help recharge Castorice’s energy, enhancing their overall power.

On Sundays, you have a high-yield option that boosts Critical Damage significantly, but it needs precise timing to match with Netherwing’s availability. Other supports like Ruan Mei, Pela, and Jiaoqiu can function effectively, yet they don’t share the same degree of harmony as Tribbie or RMC.
In summary, her optimal team setup is a hypercarry configuration that includes Tribbie, RMC, and either Gallagher or Luocha. This setup delivers the highest damage potential in both Memory of Chaos and Pure Fiction. Yet, she can also adapt to dual DPS compositions or work with Sunday for those who prefer a burst-focused gameplay. If you’re focusing on Castorice, emphasize Tribbie and a potent healing ally on attack will yield the most consistent results. However, exploring Blade or Mydei in your team can also be engaging and effective depending on specific situations.
Is Castorice worth pulling in HSR
If you’re into intense, rewarding gameplay that revolves around managing health depletion and healing, Castorice is an excellent and entertaining pick for you. She stands out particularly when you require a robust Quantum Damage Per Second (DPS) or want a unit that excels in both Master of Creation (MoC) and Pure Fiction scenarios.
If you’re seeking a hypercarry who operates independently without relying too heavily on specific allies, Castorice could seem somewhat limiting. Furthermore, her effectiveness may not be as impressive if key supports such as Tribbie or Gallagher are absent. Nevertheless, if you appreciate her playstyle and are prepared to invest in her team, Castorice is a worthy addition.

She’s not a mandatory choice like some universally weak DPS characters, but she’s an excellent high-tier option with a distinctive and enjoyable playstyle. If you’re undecided, it might be prudent to observe her performance in unbuffered endgame content before making a decision—however, if you appreciate flashy dragon summons and engaging HP-based combat mechanics, she could be a valuable addition to your collection.
