Hometown heroes rise while big names falter: Shanghai Major Opening Stage Day 1 Wrap
As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for CS:GO and a soft spot for underdogs, I must admit that the Shanghai Major has been quite the rollercoaster so far. The Aussies from FlyQuest have once again proven their mettle, defying expectations and leaving pundits eating their words. The victory over BIG was particularly impressive, considering they were slotted as a 0-3 squad in many PickEm’s. It’s almost like the “F**k your PickEm’s” phrase has become their rallying cry!
APAC CS is back on top (at least for now) as the Shanghai Major kicked off.
On the first day of the Shanghai Major, it’s two Asia-Pacific teams that are leading the pack, defying expectations. Unfortunately, some well-known figures didn’t manage to ignite on the initial day and will need to regroup or risk leaving for home a day early on the second day.
Here’s the wrap up of rounds one and two at the Perfect World Shanghai Major Opening Stage.
FlyQuest, MongolZ on brink of Elimination Stage qualification after stellar openers
Once again, the iconic phrase “Take that, PickEm’s!” echoed, as the Australian team, FlyQuest, stormed their path to a 2-0 record, securing impressive victories against Complexity and BIG.
Despite being underestimated by several members of the community, FlyQuest was frequently selected as a team predicted to win zero to three matches (0-3 squad). However, true to form, the Australian team demonstrated their prowess on the global stage when it counted the most.
In the first game of this competition, I managed a crushing 13-6 victory against Complexity on Anubis, with an impressive 11-1 scoreline in the second half. To be honest, they didn’t put up much of a fight in our best-of-one match. Among my teammates, Joshua “INS” Potter truly shined, ending the game with an outstanding 19-7 score and a high HLTV rating of 1.67.
Few anticipated FlyQuest to show such intensity against BIG, but they certainly did: FlyQuest sprang forth and swiftly took down the German team. An exceptional second half spearheaded by captain Chris “dexter” Nong (20-12, 1.70 rating) was soon transformed into a 13-5 map victory. Next up for FlyQuest is Team Liquid (with Australian Justin “jks” Savage), vying for a place in the Elimination Stage.
In the APAC region, The MongolZ, our fellow representatives, matched their success on day one equally. Initially predicted to glide through the Elimination Stage, they made sure to correct any misconceptions by securing impressive victories. They defeated Rare Atom with a score of 13-2 and MIBR with a score of 13-6, setting the record straight from the beginning.
They’ll take on GamerLegion in the second qualifying match tomorrow.
Complexity, Fnatic stumble into 0-2 elimination after shocking day one
After losing to FlyQuest, the day for Complexity turned out to be even more challenging. They followed this up with a disappointing 13-9 defeat against Passion UA. The relatively new Ukrainian team faced difficulties initially but managed to turn things around on Anubis. Apart from Jonathan “EliGE” Jablonowski, fans of Complexity were left unsatisfied with the overall performance.
As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu as we stumble into tomorrow’s elimination match against Imperial Esports. We were a force to be reckoned with at the Copenhagen Major, storming through our initial Legends Stage games, only to fall short 2-3. Now, it seems like we’re worlds apart from that team, struggling to find our footing.
The top four finish at ESL Pro League Season 19 is far removed from this version of CoL. They now have no more second chances in Shanghai.
Fnatic too struggled to get going and join Complexity and Imperial in elimination. The boys in orange were stunned by Wildcard on Mirage 13-11 — a map Wildcard have perma-banned — before falling to Cloud9 13-5. They’re favored in the 0-2 match tomorrow against Rare Atom, but the Chinese team will have the crowd behind them as they also aim to keep their major hopes alive.
