Homes Under The Hammer presenter Martin Roberts is ‘ignoring doctors advice’ to take on pub renovation project – after star was rushed to hospital for emergency heart surgery

As I delve deeper into this captivating narrative of Martin’s life journey, I am struck by the indomitable spirit that pulses through every word he speaks. His experiences are a testament to human resilience and adaptability, with each hardship serving as a stepping stone towards growth and transformation.

Martin Roberts, host of Homes Under The Hammer, has confessed that he’s disregarding medical advice and diving headfirst into a new pub renovation venture because his determination and motivation have never been stronger.

In the year 2022, a well-known television personality, who was 61 years old at the time, was urgently admitted to the hospital for an emergency heart operation due to a misunderstanding regarding his chest discomfort, which he initially believed was a prolonged case of COVID-19.

However, Martin discovered he had a condition called pericardial effusion, where excess fluid accumulates around the heart, necessitating an emergency operation. Fortunately, this intervention proved lifesaving for him.

In July of this year, motivated by his near-death experience, Martin successfully secured a planning permit to establish his own pub in a Welsh village, even though he lacked any previous experience in the hospitality sector.

Currently, the BBC presenter, when discussing his extensive upcoming venture and his well-being with The Sun, has expressed a desire to concentrate on achieving his goals instead of relaxing too much.

He candidly told the publication: ‘So, rather than me doing what I have been told to do, which is sit in a chair, take it easy, not get stressed, look after my heart, all that kind of stuff.

“I really need to focus on this task right now, as I don’t know how much longer I have to work on it, and I want to make the most of my time.

The celebrity made it clear that his focus isn’t on accumulating wealth; instead, he’s concerned with how he will be remembered and valued within the community.

He stated: ‘I came very close to dying; in fact, I was three hours from death. This experience has only strengthened my motivation to accomplish things. It’s not about making money, as it clearly isn’t doing that for me, but rather to contribute positively, to participate in community projects, and most importantly, to impact lives.’

Martin’s thrilling home renovation undertaking has ignited a concept for a fresh documentary series, set to debut on ITV during the upcoming year, chronicling his journey as he tackles this massive endeavor.

The article mentions that students pursuing construction certifications will take part in this endeavor as well.

In July 2022, Martin made an unexpected acquisition of the Hendrewen Hotel, reportedly for £200,000, without informing his wife Kirsty. This purchase was made in the village of Blaencwm, Rhondda, which is almost precisely midway between Swansea and Cardiff.

Council officials approved his plan to change the old hotel into a high-end gastro-pub offering lodging.

In his latest endeavor, he’s stepping into a new project following his transformation of a local farm into a Bed and Breakfast. However, unlike before, this time, there are cameras trailing him for a television show.

Martin purchased the Hendrewen estate, having developed a deep affection for the Rhondda Tunnel Society – an initiative aiming to restore a closed-down rail line beneath a mountain into a cycling trail connecting two Welsh valleys.

He was given full planning consent by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to extend, redevelop and refurbish the entire hotel and beer garden.

The grand scheme encompasses constructing a two-story independent dormitory with six rooms for people with disabilities, in addition to setting up a local store and a structure for storing activity equipment.

The report on approval suggested that the planned projects would result in a visually appealing development, offering extra accommodations for tourists and amenities commensurate with the site’s size and location.

The progression will ensure the longevity of the enterprise, profit both residents and tourists, and contribute significantly to the agricultural economy and its populace.

Previously, he expressed: “It immediately caught my attention, and I felt an urge to restore it. I wanted to transform it into a destination where people would be eager to visit.

Martin received financial support for his plans from the Welsh Government organization, Business Wales. However, he mentions that he also had to personally invest a significant amount of money.

He mentioned that he is pouring a significant amount of money, time, and energy into this project, and finds it quite intimidating and overwhelming.

Occasionally, I find myself awakening in the middle of the night drenched with sweat, realizing that I must take action for the community – it’s something I have to accomplish, and I will see it through. Yet, each day brings a seemingly endless list of challenges that need addressing.

If the Rhondda Tunnel proves successful, cycling from Rhondda to Swansea will become a more time-efficient option compared to driving it currently.

‘It’s an amazing thing and it doesn’t need a whole lot of money,’ he said.

Previously, during an interview with The Sun’s TV Magazine last year, he shared about an unnoticed heart issue he faced a year prior and jokingly commented on it.

The sac encompassing my heart had grown larger, exerting force upon it. My time left was scant, barely hours.

If I hadn’t been where I was… Exactly three weeks ago, I was traveling in a van and, had the event occurred then, I wouldn’t be alive today.

Martin mentioned that his health incident made him open to exploring any options, leading him to enroll in the E4 show titled “The Big Celebrity Detox,” where celebrities test various treatments such as consuming their own urine.

In the debut episode, Martin admitted to feeling ‘rocked to his core’ by his health scare.

On the demanding program that urged viewers not to imitate its challenges, Martin shared thoughts about his “terrifyingly tough year.

He said: ‘This year has been a frighteningly horrible year for me. A few months ago, I had a near-death experience and that’s rocked me to my core.

‘I actually want this to make a difference, do I think it will happen? The jury’s out.’

In the initial episode, Martin undertook a variety of challenging activities such as consuming his own urine and swallowing seeds known for inducing vomiting.

In a recent conversation with The Mirror, I openly shared my feelings, saying, “The emotional repercussions of my ordeal are not something that can be underestimated. While the physical healing happens, it’s the constant reminder that things could have taken a different turn that lingers.

It struck you that everything you worked on and everything your family built up might vanish. I was advised to pace myself, but instead, I accelerated. I hope I have many more years ahead of me, but who can say for certain?

Experiencing what I went through gives you an understanding of how fragile our existence is, like a delicate strand. However, it’s not healthy to live your life constantly worried about potential dangers.
