Home Improvement's Richard Karn, 68, reveals strict diet that's helped him shed 30 pounds and 'realigned' body

As a longtime fan of Richard Karn’s career, I am deeply impressed by his versatility and resilience in the entertainment industry. From his humble beginnings as a replacement actor on Home Improvement to becoming a beloved game show host, Richard has proven that he is more than just a plaid-wearing tool expert.

In simpler terms, Richard Karn from Home Improvement shared that he shed about 30 pounds through a disciplined diet plan which, in his words, helped him achieve better balance within his body.

Day after day, I found myself embarking on an arduous yet rewarding journey towards weight loss, and as a man nearing the big 7-0, it wasn’t easy. But my longtime partner, Tudi Roche, stood by my side, her unwavering support fueling my determination to prioritize our health together.

Karn shared with Fox News Digital that for six weeks, they followed a diet plan where they consumed approximately four ounces of meat and vegetables each time, while limiting or excluding carbs. This strategy significantly aided their weight loss efforts, he added.

He continued: ‘It kind of realigned what you need . . . you don’t pile your plate as high anymore, because you don’t need it . . . after six weeks, I think your body and your mind . . . realizes that helped.’

The father-of-one noted that his key to getting into shape has been practicing ‘moderation’ and not overindulging on sweets.

‘If you can… don’t have five desserts, have a bite of one,’ he advised.

In the past, while working on his hit ’90s sitcom, Home Improvement, alongside Tim Allen, Karn often found himself drawn to the assortment of tasty foods provided by the set’s catering service.

Initially, there was an abundance of food available on the set for you to consume freely. He reminisced about attending events where food was provided. At some stage, he found himself contemplating, “I could consume all of this, but I shouldn’t. I can’t… and yet, here I am, 10 pounds heavier than my desired weight.

After making significant changes to his lifestyle, Karn has lost 30 pounds and now feels that his weight is balanced at the desired level.

I visited the place where my doctor was overjoyed about my progress… He nearly implied that I seemed a bit underweight.” (While reminiscing about his weight loss journey.)

He and his wife, who share a 32-year-old son named Cooper, celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary in October.

Karn gained significant recognition for playing the character ‘Al Borland’ on the ABC sitcom Home Improvement, which ran from 1991 to 1999.

As an overly enthusiastic fan, I can’t help but gush about my favorite character who shared the spotlight on the fictitious talk show-within-a-show, “Tool Time”. This legendary program was masterfully hosted by none other than the iconic Tim ‘The Tool Man’ Taylor, played by the one and only Tim Allen.

Among the two, Alan had a more subtle charisma on camera, yet he was the one with extensive knowledge in tool handling and construction, contrasting Tim who tended to be more telegenic.

In the show, I always donned a distinctively recognizable attire – typically, a plaid flannel shirt and a hearty beard that occasionally became the focus of Allen’s amusing quips.

Initially, the actor joined the show as a regular character following the unavailability of Stephen Tobolowsky, who was originally cast but couldn’t continue due to scheduling issues with a movie role during the recording of the pilot episode.

Despite initially being a substitute character, Karn became highly popular among viewers, leading to his promotion to the primary cast of Home Improvement during its second season.

After wrapping up Home Improvement with a total of eight seasons in 1999, Richard Karn became the fourth sole host of Family Feud in 2002.

He departed the series in 2006, when Seinfeld actor John O’Hurley replaced him.

After that, he went on to host the game show, “Bingo America,” from the years 2008 to 2009. He continued to be a sought-after TV actor for guest appearances.

In the past few years, Karn took on a significant role again, starting from 2019, as he became a regular cast member on the widely praised Hulu comedy show called PEN15.

The show was developed by its creators and lead actors, Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle, portraying fictitious representations of themselves from the age of 13 onwards.

In their mid-thirties, these two ladies presented an unexpectedly humorous contrast against the child actors, all of whom were age-suitable for their middle school setting.

In various scenes, Karn played the role of Maya’s father, who was a drummer for struggling music groups, frequently traveling and seldom at home. However, in truth, Erskine’s real-life father is the esteemed jazz drummer and ex-member of Weather Report, Peter Erskine.

In 2021, the creators and stars announced that the show’s second season would be its last.

Last year, Karn teamed up with Allen once more on the pandemic-themed TV show Assembly Required, a home repair competition that was reminiscent of Home Improvement.

In 2022, April Wilkerson reappeared as a guest on their show titled “More Power,” where she and two other individuals discussed the progression from traditional tools to modern technology-driven devices.

As a devoted fan, I must share that while Karn had been a part of numerous films in secondary roles prior, it wasn’t until the 1998 movie “Legend Of The Mummy” where he made his debut as a lead actor. However, since then, he has consistently worked in the film industry without any interruptions.

In the past year, Karn featured in two installments of the rebooted Jonathan Frakes-led series titled Beyond Belief, and there are several small-scale movies and television programs planned for him in the near future.
