Home and Away Star Warns Fans About Bizarre Catfishing Scam

A popular Home and Away star has been caught up in a bizarre Facebook catfish scam.

On Monday, Nicholas Cartwright, aged 36, felt compelled to speak up following an imposter posing as him reaching out to multiple female admirers of the actor via social media platforms.

According to Cartwright, fraudsters created fake “catfish” profiles on Facebook to trick innocent women into thinking they were in a romantic relationship with them.

The scammer would then ask the women for cash.

‘Look guys I normally don’t like to have to make these announcement things,’ he began.

However, numerous women have been tricked and deceived by fake profiles on Facebook, utilizing my photo. My inbox has been flooded with such reports.

It was somewhat wishful thinking that the situation would resolve itself without any intervention, but that hasn’t happened. Now, I find myself dealing with concerned individuals reaching out to my superiors and family members, and there are an array of peculiar occurrences taking place.

The actor has fixed the video as a highlight on his Instagram account, which boasts 70,000 followers, and labeled it “Warning: Potential Scam”.

‘This is my only social media. I hardly even use social media,’ he continued.

‘I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it’s terrible.’

Nicholas jokingly criticized the quality of his video, pointing out that he only spends a dollar each month on an older Motorola handset.

The actor genuinely apologized to all affected fans for being part of the scam, emphasizing that his authentic social media presence can be found only at @_nicholas_cartwright_ on Instagram.

Essentially, he conveyed that the situation is complex yet regrettable (scamming has occurred). Despite this not being his responsibility, he expressed sympathy and wished for everyone’s well-being.

‘Just to clarify, if you come across someone who resembles me online, please know I’m not seeking financial help nor planning to marry anyone in New Zealand.’

Catfishing is the act of designing a false online personality or identity, primarily for the purpose of deceiving others.

It’s often the case that swindlers trick people into forming online romantic connections with them, intending to profit financially.

Or, more informally: Scammers frequently create fake love stories online just to get money from unsuspecting victims.

About two years back, a man who was accused of stalking Sophie Monk asserted that he thought they were in a relationship because he had been tricked online (catfished). This declaration came after he showed up at her doorstep with a red rose.

On April 25, 2023, Brian Rapley, aged 51, was accused of visiting Sophie’s residence at Central Coast under the assumption that they would finally meet face-to-face following their affectionate online conversations.

Brian asserted that someone pretending to be Sophie had been sending him affectionate messages via texts and DMs over a period of four months, before ultimately defrauding him of $7,000.

Since a 2024 texting scandal linked to one of the former bosses of Home and Away made news headlines, Nicholas has primarily stayed away from online platforms.

As a lifestyle guru, I found myself expressing strong feelings towards Dan Bennett, the Network Script Executive for Seven Soap during 2016-2017, following his comment on one of my social media updates.

Bennett shared with Daily Mail Australia that he had previously witnessed him publicizing a future plot for the show Home and Away, which involves the return of the River Boys.

The show aims to revitalize the overall crime vibe with its drug-related themes and darkness. However, instead of expressing excitement or intrigue, I merely sent a message saying ‘zzz’, which implies it seems dull and unoriginal since similar themes have been presented previously.

Indeed, those are merely my thoughts as a current fan. Yet, it’s surprising how Nicholas Cartwright, often regarded as a notable figure in the show, reached out to me via direct messages, addressing me with an offensive term like ‘a witch.’

I haven’t had the chance to meet Nicholas, but if his manner with fans is as you describe, it’s truly unsettling.
