Home and Away star Tammin Sursok celebrates two years of sobriety – as she reveals the ‘terrible’ moment that made her quit drinking for good
As an ardent admirer of Tammin Sursok, I find myself utterly captivated by her inspiring journey towards sobriety. Her strength and determination to break free from societal norms and embrace a healthier lifestyle is truly commendable.
On Wednesday, Tammin Sursok marked a remarkable achievement as she disclosed that it’s been two years since she last had a drink.
Previously, the actress who used to play on the popular show “Home and Away,” now aged 41, confided to Daily Mail Australia that in her youth, much like any typical Australian of legal drinking age, she would readily accept a glass of wine during social gatherings.
However, by October 2022, the host of the Sh*t Show podcast made a positive change and gave up alcohol as a means to cope with her social anxiety, choosing instead to move forward in a healthier manner.
Tammin emphasized that she wasn’t an alcoholic, and she didn’t wish to minimize the struggles of those who are. She clarified that she drank socially, as it was something commonly promoted in her circle.
Occasionally, I found that it alleviated my anxiety, but later on, as I grew older and hormonal changes occurred, I came to understand that alcohol was no longer effective for me.
As an Australian child, you might believe your abstinence from alcohol could set you apart. Given this wasn’t a challenge I faced personally, I kept quiet about it for some time.
‘Then, over time, the want for it just slowly started to disappear. It took a while,’ she added.
Tammin went on to say she has been a teetotaller ‘on and off for about four years’, but revealed it was two years ago that she quit drinking for good.
She mentioned that she enjoyed a half-filled glass of champagne following the completion of filming for the movie Blood, Sweat & Cheer (released in 2023), according to her statement.
The movie was a powerful, both physically and emotionally engaging one. By the end, I found myself exclaiming, “Wow, what an incredible journey! I can’t wait to celebrate this fantastic experience.
Yesterday, I enjoyed a glass of wine, but the following day, I suffered from a severe migraine. It was as if this experience, which should have been enjoyable and delightful, had an adverse effect on me instead.
Tammin mentioned that it had been some time since she last felt like she had consumed too much alcohol, yet she pointed out that even a small amount could potentially affect her well-being negatively.
Tammin revealed she sometimes gets ocular migraines which cause impaired vision and speech, and sends ‘tingles down my arm’.
These migraines were only worsened by Tammin’s weekly social drinking, which would see her consume a typical four beverages every week.
She said, “I won’t ever consume more than two at once, as anything beyond that makes me feel quite unpleasant.
In my early thirties, it was common for me to attend events twice on Mondays, not at all on Tuesdays, once on Wednesdays, and again twice on Fridays. This pattern was quite regular.
Tammin added: ‘I was having very little time where I was actually feeling good.’
She frequently relied on drinking alcohol to ease her social anxiety during gatherings and interactions in social settings.
For her, that experience stood out significantly, and it included savoring a beverage with meals. She enjoyed having a glass of wine during dinner, yet afterwards, she’d return home feeling lightheaded and queasy.
Currently, I must admit that I no longer yearn for it. Nor do I ponder upon it. To put it simply, it’s no longer present in our existence.
The actress, who is married to Sean McEwen and has two daughters, aged 11 (Phoenix) and 5 (Lennon), mentioned an increasing trend among individuals choosing to abstain from social drinking.
As an advocate for wellness, I firmly believe there’s a significant movement promoting a sober lifestyle. I am convinced that by openly discussing this topic, we can make a profound impact on countless lives.
She added: ‘I think the more we talk about this and the more stories we share, a lot of people won’t feel like it’s a taboo topic to not be drinking.’
On Wednesday, Tammin marked two years of being sober by posting an emotional video on Instagram.
The title raised doubts if the actress believed she could still enjoy herself while abstaining from alcohol, followed by her giving a cheerful smile and presenting a series of lively moments from her recent busy year.
The star seemed to be thoroughly enjoying herself, dancing at gatherings and concerts while spending quality time with friends, all without a hint of alcohol present.
In a heartfelt confession, I’ve admitted that I never imagined I’d give up booze, yet, around two years back, I found myself questioning my reasons for drinking.
“I don’t understand why I’m doing things that leave me feeling bad in the long run, when for a brief moment I felt good. It seems foolish to waste today for the sake of tomorrow.
She added that she doesn’t miss drinking and is ‘actually more excited to be social and have fun, go to concerts, be with my family’.
In my pursuit of growth and self-discovery, I’ve decided to open up about my personal experiences. Embrace your own path, always! Sharing mine might just spark an idea or encourage you to embark on a fresh adventure in 2025 – who knows where it could lead? Stay curious and keep exploring!
