Home Alone fans stunned to learn the movie wasn’t filmed in THAT famous house – as the ‘crazy’ real location is revealed

It’s the film that is on everyone’s screens over the Christmas period.

Surprisingly, many scenes in Home Alone weren’t filmed in a house at all – they were actually shot in a school gymnasium! It’s a detail that might surprise even dedicated fans.

The beloved 1990 film follows eight-year-old Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) as he protects his house from burglars after accidentally being left behind when his family goes on vacation to Paris.

As a huge fan, I was totally shocked to find out that the famous house they showed in the movie was just for outside shots! I always imagined all the scenes were filmed inside there, but apparently not.

What appeared to be the interior of a grand mansion was actually a meticulously constructed set built inside the gym at New Trier Township High School.

In a recent re-emerged interview, Scott Rosenfelt, who was an executive producer on Home Alone, explained that the school used in the film was actually a fully constructed, two-story set with working stairs.

‘The front door, we shot here. The school turned into a backlot.’

Another filmmaker explained that the location was too cramped for the crew, making a dedicated set necessary. Unfortunately, Chicago lacked suitable sound stages at the time.

People on X (formerly Twitter) pointed out that the house from ‘Home Alone’ wasn’t actually used for the scenes inside. Instead, the interior was reportedly built to the exact same size within a high school gymnasium.

‘The whole movie was shot on a set. That house was only used for exterior shots’,

I hadn’t realized that before. It all makes sense now that it’s been explained, but it’s funny that I never thought about it myself.

‘Wow, in a school gymnasium? That’s crazy but obviously worked’,

‘#HomeAlone was filmed in a high school gym’.

Home Alone is now a beloved Christmas tradition, known for its funny story and hilarious scenes.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, the beloved holiday film has officially been named the UK’s favorite Christmas movie.

Macaulay Culkin recently stirred up debate again, this time at an event celebrating the 35th anniversary of Home Alone. He told the crowd that Die Hard isn’t a Christmas movie, continuing a discussion he started earlier this month. The event, ‘A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin,’ was held at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center in California.

The crowd reacted negatively when he claimed that the popular 1988 action movie Die Hard, which starts on Christmas Eve, doesn’t qualify as a Christmas film, as reported by People magazine.

After being heckled by the crowd, he said, ‘I hear you. Some of you seem eager to take this outside – I’m happy to meet you by the loading dock – but let’s remember, it’s just a Christmas movie.’

He explained that if you simply changed the setting of the movie to St. Patrick’s Day, it would still be essentially the same film. He specifically used ‘Home Alone’ as an example, imagining it taking place on St. Patrick’s Day.
