Hollywood Mourns: Heartfelt Tributes Pour In for David Lynch, the Mastermind Behind Twin Peaks
Notable figures such as Ron Howard and James Gunn have honored the late David Lynch, a legendary figure in Hollywood, after his passing at the age of 78.
On Thursday, it was shared on social media that the family of a filmmaker who has been nominated for four Oscars revealed some sad news.
Known for creating the legendary TV show Twin Peaks and the movie Blue Velvet, David Lynch has been dealing with poor health lately, confined at home due to his struggle with emphysema.
In a Facebook post, his dear ones mournfully declared: ‘We, his family, sadly share the news of the departure from life of the person and the artist, David Lynch.’
‘At the moment, we kindly ask for some space. It feels like there’s a massive void left behind since he’s not here anymore.’
Instead of focusing on the challenges or difficulties (the holes), appreciate the beautiful aspects (the donuts) like the sunny, golden day with clear, blue skies.
Rather than dwelling on the problems, let’s focus on enjoying the sunshine and the clear blue sky today.
‘Rest in peace, David Lynch – a kind-hearted individual and bold creator who dared to follow his instincts and demonstrated that pushing boundaries can lead to timeless films.’
DC Studios boss James Gunn penned: ‘RIP David Lynch. You inspired so many of us.’
Patton Oswalt, who considers David Lynch’s 1977 film Eraserhead as one of his most influential movies, wrote: ‘David Lynch has passed away. Or so a horse wearing a fez claimed in a dream I had – it was written backwards and in Swedish.’
As a youngster, the work of director David Lynch greatly influenced me. I can still recall the times I watched Eraserhead repeatedly on VHS.
‘The movies he made, his distinctive voice, and his groundbreaking TV series Twin Peaks significantly impacted me during my early years. An audacious filmmaker, a creative genius, and an influential figure, he was. Farewell, Mr. Lynch, may your unique spirit rest peacefully.’
In an interview with IndieWire, Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine recalled David Lynch, stating, “David Lynch was one of our remarkable artists, a legendary filmmaker, undoubtedly a ‘GOAT’ (Greatest Of All Time). He significantly impacted many lives. There will never be another quite like him, as he crafted films during an era when such unique creations were unheard of.
In our current era, it seems like nothing is left unexplored. However, Lynch developed an unprecedented linguistic style. This extraordinary individual, appearing only once in a century, harnessed the sparks of America’s untamed spirit.
‘He drew upon his personal intuition, which he perceived as a kind of hidden enchantment, to weave unique realms and frequencies. He touched on concepts that were mysterious, sacred, and indescribable. He is an invaluable asset. His creations will endure through time.’
Lynch is mourned by his spouse Emily Stofle, as well as his daughters Jennifer Lynch, Austin Jack Lynch, and Riley Lynch.
In a conversation with Sight & Sound last August, Lynch mentioned that his health issue was likely due to years of smoking.
‘I’m essentially confined at home, regardless of my preference. I can’t leave, and I can only walk a little before I run out of breath due to lack of oxygen.’
In a candid moment, the filmmaker behind Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks acknowledged that his fondness for smoking led him to this circumstance.
Lynch said: ‘Smoking was something that I absolutely loved, but in the end, it bit me.
For me, living an artistic life included savoring tobacco, its aroma, igniting objects, puffing on them, returning to my seat, taking another puff while scrutinizing my work or contemplating ideas.
‘Nothing like it in this world is so beautiful. Meanwhile, it’s killing me. So I had to quit.’
Despite the fact that his illness currently keeps him from working on projects hands-on, he hasn’t entirely given up on the idea of directing in the future.
He prefers being surrounded by things for inspiration, but if necessary, he’s willing to work remotely instead.
Lynch mentioned a concept he had proposed for an animated series, titled “Snootworld,” that Netflix considered but ultimately declined.
In November, he shared with People that he frequently needed additional oxygen and found it challenging to walk even across a small room.
He described his struggle with emphysema as if he was continuously moving about with a bag made of plastic covering his face.
Though he has no regrets, Lynch wishes that the grim health news he received might inspire other smokers to give up smoking.
Additionally, he communicated this message to the media: “Consider this carefully. Give up habits that could ultimately lead to your demise.
Lynch acknowledged that his longtime practice came with a substantial cost, yet he expressed no regrets about it.
By the time he gave up cigarettes the father-of-four could ‘hardly move without gasping for air.’
‘Quitting was my only choice,’ he said.
Before his health problems, his last significant work was bringing back his television show “Twin Peaks” on Showtime in 2017.
The initial run of the show spanned from 1990 to 1991, focusing on the investigation into the murder of high school homecoming queen Laura Palmer (portrayed by Sheryl Lee), set within the imaginary town of Twin Peaks, Washington.
During its initial broadcast in the early ’90s, the show gained a devoted fanbase following its stint on ABC, eventually leading to the production of the 1992 prequel movie titled “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me.
Over two decades Lynch’s signature franchise made a comeback with Twin Peaks: The Return.
The original stars Kyle MacLachlan, Sherilyn Fenn, Mädchen Amick, Lee, and David Duchovny reappeared during the series’ comeback.
Additionally, other notable figures like Laura Dern, Amanda Seyfried, Jessica Szohr, Michael Cera, Richard Chamberlain, and Trent Reznor were also incorporated into the ensemble cast.
Among his notable works, Lynch is also known for films such as Eraserhead (1977), The Elephant Man (1980), Blue Velvet (1986), Mulholland Drive (2001), and Inland Empire (2006).
