Shirley MacLaine was spotted enjoying a rare public appearance this week, having lunch at Nobu in Malibu.
The 91-year-old Hollywood icon was seen looking peaceful and enjoying the sun at a popular celebrity hangout, which is a rare public appearance for the usually private star.
Shirley MacLaine arrived at the popular oceanfront restaurant, a regular spot for celebrities, seeming cheerful and relaxed. She was with an assistant.
The Academy Award-winning actor chose a relaxed and comfortable outfit for the afternoon, pairing a t-shirt from ‘Bode’s General Store’ with khaki pants.
This sighting happened only a few months after Shirley MacLaine was last seen at her favorite Malibu cafe, Kristy’s Village Cafe.
Although she’s a well-known actress from ‘Terms of Endearment,’ she hasn’t been seen much in public lately, which makes her recent appearance especially noteworthy.
Shirley MacLaine turned 91 in April and has often shared what she believes keeps her healthy for so long, pointing to her lifelong love of dance, which she began at age three.
She began dancing at age three and continued for about 67 years. As she shared with People magazine, it instilled in her discipline, a love for music, the ability to collaborate, and resilience in the face of discomfort.
The celebrated actress, older sister to Warren Beatty, has also stated she doesn’t plan to retire anytime soon.
Shirley MacLaine recently shared how thankful she is for her good health, close friends, and the chance to continue working even in her nineties.
Shirley MacLaine doesn’t appear in public much anymore, but she still lives a low-key life in Malibu, often returning from her ranch in New Mexico.
I’ve been a huge Shirley MacLaine fan for years, and it’s amazing to think her career started way back in 1955! She actually landed a leading role in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Trouble With Harry right away, but even before that, she was already a star on Broadway, appearing in shows like Oklahoma! and The Pajama Game. It’s incredible how much talent she’s always had!
In a 2017 interview with W Magazine, she described herself as a newcomer who felt lost and inexperienced, like a small, insignificant chorus member.
She initially thought Hitchcock prioritized finding actors who naturally fit the role over directing their performance, but this actually benefited her because she felt she was a natural fit for the character.
I’ve been a fan for years, and it’s amazing to think that even with so many wonderful films under her belt – classics like ‘Some Came Running,’ ‘The Apartment,’ ‘Sweet Charity,’ and even ‘Two Mules for Sister Sara’ – she didn’t receive an Oscar until the 80s! Finally, in 1983, she won Best Actress for ‘Terms of Endearment,’ and it was so well-deserved. That movie, with Debra Winger and Jack Nicholson, is just perfect, and I was thrilled she got the recognition she’d earned after so many fantastic performances.
The popular movie was a major success at the Oscars, winning awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor – an award Nicholson himself received.
She also appeared in several films later in her career, including Bewitched (2005), Bernie (2011), and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013).
Shirley isn’t working as quickly as she used to, but she still appears in around one movie or television show each year.
She recently appeared in two episodes of the popular comedy series Only Murders In The Building (2022). She also starred in the film American Dreamers alongside Peter Dinklage, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2022 and was released in 2025.
While speaking to Extra in 2024, Shirley revealed her surprising plans for her 90th birthday.
Instead of having a large celebration, she mentioned she’d be working on a new project on a film set in Atlantic City.
Her strong work ethic has allowed her to remain a working actress in Hollywood for almost seventy years, though she acknowledges that the industry has changed a lot over time.
She told Extra that Hollywood isn’t what it used to be, explaining that the growth of streaming services has completely changed the industry.
