Hollywood actresses reveal the disgusting reasons they were turned down for roles from branding Amy Adams ‘unsexy’, Kate Winslet a ‘fat girl’ and Tiffany Haddish ‘ghetto’

Rejection is always a hard pill to swallow.

Let me tell you, even A-list celebrities – the ones who seem like they have it all together – experience rejection. I’ve heard stories from so many of them about times they’ve been turned down for a part and it’s left them feeling really down, even questioning their talent. It’s a totally normal reaction, honestly!

Being rejected is always difficult, but it’s especially hurtful and frustrating when it’s based on someone’s appearance.

Several Hollywood actresses have revealed the unfair and sexist reasons they lost out on roles. Amy Adams was told she wasn’t attractive enough, Kate Winslet was labeled as overweight, and Tiffany Haddish was described with a derogatory term related to her background.

Actress being branded ‘unf**kable’ has also been a common reason given when being denied a role.

Now, Daily Mail reveals some of the shocking reasons Hollywood stars have been turned down.

Kate Winslet

Kate shared in an interview with the Sunday Times that she faced tough criticism early in her career.

The actress, now 50, remembers being told early in her career that she would only be considered for roles portraying overweight characters.

She explained that the experience can be very damaging. People are put under intense pressure and criticism that can be overwhelming, especially for those who are young and still developing.

Kate, who shot to fame after playing Rose in 1997’s Titanic, says that the tides are changing now.

‘But in the film industry it is really changing,’ she noted.

When I was starting out, my agent would actually get calls asking about my weight – it’s true! It’s really encouraging to see that things are finally starting to change in that regard.

Tiffany Haddish

Tiffany, age 46, intentionally left her phone visible in the audition room to overhear the casting directors’ feedback and understand why she didn’t get the part.

Tiffany told The Hollywood Reporter she used voice memos to gather information.

You know, I used to be terrible at first impressions! I’d go into an audition, immediately leave, and then casually stroll back in pretending I’d forgotten something – usually my purse! It was a nervous habit, but honestly, it was my way of trying to seem… relaxed. Looking back, it was a bit of a disaster, but it’s a funny story now!

I was surprised by her personality and how she presented herself; it wasn’t what I expected. I’m also realizing I have a preference for a different physical appearance in a partner, specifically someone who is white and has a more ample bust.

‘This role should be changed to white’, Tiffany heard on the recordings.

Despite the disgusting things she heard, Tiffany said she would use it to ‘grow’ in the industry.

Tiffany explained she wants to learn from everything, both for personal growth and to find material for her comedy. She sees value in using these experiences to her benefit.

They once told me I couldn’t succeed because I struggled with reading. After that, I began practicing my lines aloud much more often to improve.

Amy Adams

Amy, now 51, is renowned for her roles in Catch Me If You Can, Arrival and Enchanted.

Amy, like many actresses, didn’t get a movie role she tried out for because of an inappropriate and upsetting reason.

She says she lost her job on the show ‘Dr. Vegas’ because producers didn’t think she was attractive enough to be paired romantically with Rob Lowe.

Rob echoed the ordeal in his book Love Life, adding that Amy wasn’t pretty in a ‘TV way’.

Amy explained that she wasn’t actually fired from the film, but she realized she was being replaced when ‘they brought in a very tall blonde actress.’

Sharon Stone

Sharon, who is now 68 years old, recently discussed her beginnings in the film industry. She revealed that she faced difficulty landing roles early in her career and ultimately posed for Playboy hoping to be offered leading female parts.

She became famous for her role in the 1992 film Basic Instinct, playing a captivating and alluring character. She’s said this role has significantly shaped her life and career ever since.

When asked if the #MeToo movement had brought about a real shift, Sharon explained that early in her career as a model and actress, being considered ‘attractive’ was often the same as being considered ’employable’ and ‘good on camera.’

Twenty years ago, attitudes towards women were often much more biased. Mel Gibson, who’s a few years older than I am, actually told me I was too old to be in a movie with him.

Elle Fanning

Elle shockingly claimed she missed out on a movie role aged 16 because she was deemed ‘unf***able’.

The acclaimed 27-year-old actress, who started acting when she was only three, shared a story with The Hollywood Reporter about a particularly upsetting audition. She described how she didn’t get a part in a family movie, and called the experience ‘disgusting’.

She shared a story she’d never told anyone before: she once auditioned for a film, a funny movie about a father and daughter taking a road trip. She didn’t get the part, and she doesn’t even think the movie was ever made.

My agents hadn’t contacted me, and I realized it was probably because they were hiding things – specifically, that they were filtering out a lot of negative comments to protect me. But somehow, this particular comment slipped through.

When I was sixteen, someone dismissed my lack of enjoyment of a father-daughter road trip comedy by saying I wasn’t considered attractive enough to ‘get’ it.

‘It’s so disgusting. And I can laugh at it now, like, “What a disgusting pig!”‘

The actress shared that she’s always been very self-assured while growing up in the spotlight and believes her early fame didn’t negatively affect her.

Growing up as a child actor in Hollywood, she felt very well-cared for, thanks to the constant support of her manager and agent, who have been with her since she was a young girl – around eight or nine years old.

Melora Hardin

I’ll never forget hearing Melora Hardin talk about getting fired from Back to the Future. She actually cried when she found out – can you imagine? It was such a huge movie, and she was devastated to lose the role. It really stuck with me how much it affected her.

After Michael J. Fox was chosen to play Marty McFly, another actor ended up losing their job as a result.

Melora was initially chosen to play Marty McFly’s girlfriend, Jennifer Parker, but Claudia Wells ultimately took on the role.

Melora shared with Entertainment Weekly that she was deeply upset by ‘Back to the Future.’ ‘I was 17, and I actually cried,’ she explained.

It was really disheartening to think about all the projects that never came to fruition. I still remember how difficult those situations were.

I was shocked to hear she was let go simply because the studio thought she was ‘too tall’ to appear alongside Michael. It just didn’t seem fair, and honestly, it felt really shallow.

Apparently, the two female executives at the time felt it undermined the lead male character’s image to show him in scenes with a taller woman.

If I had been involved, things definitely would have turned out differently. I wouldn’t have created The Office.

Getting to where I am today means experiencing a lot more setbacks than successes. People often don’t see that from the outside looking in – it takes a real willingness to embrace failure and constantly take risks.

Don’t let setbacks define you. The key is to learn from your mistakes, constantly improve, and keep pushing forward – that’s how you succeed in this field.

Zoë Kravitz

Zoë had previously said she wasn’t chosen for a role in The Dark Knight Rises because she was considered ‘too urban’ in her look or style.

Zoë Kravitz, 37, recently shared her experience auditioning for a Christopher Nolan film and believes she wasn’t cast due to her race.

Zoë explained to The Observer that it was deeply upsetting to be told she wasn’t considered intelligent because of her race and ethnicity. She specifically mentioned the harmful way the term “urban” was used in that context, making that time particularly difficult for her.

I’m not sure if the message came straight from Chris Nolan himself. It was likely sent by someone on the casting team, maybe a casting director or one of their assistants.

The actress shared that her parents, Lenny and Lisa Bonet, had a conversation with her about navigating the challenges of the entertainment industry when she was starting out.

She explained that they seemed primarily concerned with ensuring she knew she was free to express herself – to act, dress, or live as she pleased – regardless of her race.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon, now 49, was told she didn’t get a role in a movie because she was seen as too intelligent and spirited.

In 2019, actress Reese Witherspoon, known for her role in Legally Blonde, shared that while facing rejection was tough, it ultimately helped her grow into the person she is today.

The Academy Award-winning actor shared on Instagram that while many posts highlight achievements, it’s important to remember that setbacks and failures can actually be valuable learning experiences.

When I was first starting my acting career, there was one role I desperately wanted, and I auditioned for it with everything I had.

I was really excited about this movie, especially since it starred a major male actor. I went through three auditions, then a screen test, but my agent eventually called to tell me I didn’t get the role. Apparently, the lead actor preferred working with the other actress.

I cried a lot – really ugly tears – for three full days. But I eventually felt better and found a new job. It wasn’t the same as before, and I even avoided watching that movie ever again! Still, the whole experience taught me a lot. Looking back, I’ve had as many setbacks as successes.

People always told me I was ‘too much’ of something – too short, too spirited, too full of energy. I even had someone tell me I seemed too intelligent to play a young woman in a role.

It’s true, being rejected really stung sometimes, and I often took it to heart. I cried quite a bit during my twenties because of it. Looking back, I realize those experiences actually taught me how to be resilient and develop a thicker skin.

You also realize not every opportunity is a good fit. As my friend Kerry Washington often says, ‘Rejection can actually be a blessing in disguise.’

You’re on a unique journey meant just for you. Sometimes, things don’t work out – like a job or a relationship – because the universe is actually shielding you from something harmful.

When things don’t go as planned, or you’re hurting from a loss, it’s okay to feel sad for a little while. Allow yourself to grieve, but then focus on moving forward – even better opportunities are ahead.

Emma Thompson

Emma, the 66-year-old actress known for ‘Love Actually,’ has been a longtime advocate for accepting your body. This stems from her own struggles with body image issues during her youth and early adulthood.

When a male Hollywood executive told Emma she wasn’t attractive enough to perform nude scenes in a film, she strongly voiced her opinion.

For decades, the actress known for playing Nanny McPhee has charmed people across the country with her friendly smile and kind nature.

Yet behind her smile is an actress who has faced rejection and body shaming.

In an interview with The Times, Emma shared that she was often told she didn’t fit the expected body type for nude scenes in the industry.

I haven’t often been asked to do sex scenes in my career. My mother always said I tend to play ‘good’ characters – the intellectual type, as she put it. Plus, I’ve never fit the typical physical mold that filmmakers often look for in those kinds of roles.

She explained that when she says “they,” she’s referring to male leaders. She felt she was considered too outspoken, and not conventionally attractive or the ‘right’ body type, and was frequently told what her body was like.

Priyanka Chopra

Indian actress Priyanka, 43, is one of Bollywood’s most popular stars.

Despite being a famous actress, she was rejected from a movie role in 2017 because producers didn’t think her appearance was suitable.

Years later, in an interview with Vogue, Priyanka clarified that she had initially been unsure why she wasn’t selected, but now understood it was due to her race.

Oh my god, can you believe it? She told me this story from 2018, and it still makes me so mad! She was just trying to enjoy a movie when someone from the studio called her agent – can you imagine?! – and basically said she wasn’t… the right look for the part. They actually used the word ‘physicality’! Like she wasn’t the right shape or something! It’s just awful, honestly. I’ve been defending her ever since!

As an actor, I often wonder if I need to change my body – lose weight, get in better shape, or even get a six-pack. It’s confusing when someone says my ‘physicality’ is off; what exactly does that mean?

My agent explained what they really meant by their feedback. Basically, they were looking for someone who wasn’t a person of color.

It definitely had an impact on me. People might not openly admit that a woman of color is paid less because of her race and gender, but the data often shows that’s exactly what happens.

Priyanka quit her career in Bollywood following a dehumanizing experience she faced on a movie set.

‘This may have been 2002 or 2003,’ she stated in an interview with The Zoe Project.

The woman, who has one child, explained that she was pretending to be someone she wasn’t and was trying to win the trust of a man. She joked that this involved a slow process of removing one item of clothing at a time, playing on a stereotype of how women act when going undercover.

Priyanka shared that she initially wanted to wear more clothing, but the director insisted on a revealing outfit, arguing that it was necessary to attract viewers to the film.

The celebrity told the publication that the comment wasn’t made directly to them, but to the stylist who was with them. They described it as a really upsetting and disrespectful experience.

She described feeling like her worth came only from being useful to others, and that her own creativity and contributions didn’t matter.

Just two days after the issue arose, Priyanka announced she was leaving the film. However, her father convinced her to cover the money the production team had already spent, so she personally paid to make up the difference.

She explained she left the project because she didn’t want to see the director daily.

Although she faced challenges adjusting to life in America and establishing herself as an actress, she began to find success in Hollywood, notably with her role in the popular ABC series Quantico, which ran from 2015 to 2019.

Priyanka Chopra married Nick Jonas in 2018. They welcomed their daughter, Malti, through surrogacy in January 2022. Malti needed a hundred days of care in the NICU, but thankfully, she was able to come home just before Mother’s Day.

Oliva Wilde

Olivia was considered too old for two roles in Leonardo DiCaprio films: Teresa Petrillo, the first wife of his character, and Naomi Lapaglia in The Wolf of Wall Street.

At the time she was 32, while Leonardo was 37.

Instead, a then 22-year-old Margot Robbie scooped the role up of Naomi.

Olivia, age 42, once discussed on The Howard Stern Show whether her looks had ever cost her a job. She was asked if she’d ever been turned down for a role because she was considered too beautiful.

She didn’t agree. She said the most amusing thing she’d heard lately was someone telling her she was too refined for a role.

I responded positively to that feedback, even though I wasn’t selected for the role. I’m taking it in stride, as I’m confident in my abilities.

Honestly, I was crushed when I heard they actually called me ‘old’! It got me thinking – I need to create a guide for anyone trying to make it in Hollywood. It’ll be a translation of all that agent-speak – you know, what they say versus what they really mean. It’s going to be so helpful, I swear!
