Hollywood actor reveals serial killer John Wayne Gacy kidnapped and raped him at age 19
As I delve into the chilling tale of John Wayne Gacy, a man whose life was a twisted tapestry of normality and horror, I am left in awe at the depths of depravity that humanity can reach. Born in 1942, he established his contracting company, PDM Contractors, in 1970, a seemingly innocuous beginning to a story that would soon become the stuff of nightmares.
Actor Jack Merrill from Hollywood recently disclosed that he was abducted and sexually assaulted by the infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy back in 1978.
Merrill, who is currently 65 years old and has worked on shows like The O.C., Hannah Montana, and Games People Play, managed to survive an ordeal at the age of 19 when Gacy bound him with ropes, placed a gun in his mouth, and sexually assaulted him. This incident occurred only a few months before Gacy was apprehended.
Known for his clown persona, “Pogo the Clown,” Gacy was a ruthless killer who took the lives of 33 young males from 1972 to 1978. To this day, the identities of five of his victims still remain unknown.
He raped, tortured and strangled his male victims before disposing of them in the crawl space beneath his house. Gacy was executed by lethal injection in 1994 aged 52.
17-year-old Merrill, an aspiring actor, left his Evanston, Illinois residence following a violent altercation with his father on Christmas Eve. He then lived in a studio apartment with a view of Chicago’s Rush Street, an encounter that eventually brought him face to face with Gacy.
At that moment, Merrill, who had been employed at local clubs, recounts an incident where he was strolling home after a dip at the YMCA in downtown Chicago. It was Gacy, aged 36, who stopped by and offered him a lift, as reported by People.
He said: ‘I thought I’d go around the block a few times, but he started driving quickly and turned into a really bad neighborhood. He said, “Lock your door. It’s dangerous.” I said they kept that out of the papers because it was bad for business on nearby Rush Street, and he said, “How do you know that, huh? You’re smart. You’re not like those other kids.”
Merrill acknowledged that he appreciated Gacy’s remark and got into the car with him, yet it didn’t take long before Gacy stopped the vehicle and inquired whether Merrill had ever tried ‘poppers’, specifically amyl nitrate.
Instead of Amyl nitrate causing a brief rush to the head and inducing an exhilarating sensation, it also has the effect of soothing unwanted muscle contractions, for instance in the throat or anus.
Merrill stated that Gacy took out a bottle, doused some fluid onto a cloth, and then forced it against his face. This action caused him to lose consciousness. Upon regaining awareness, he found himself restrained with handcuffs on.
Gacy drove Merrill to his house where the terrified teenager then realized just ‘how dangerous’ Gacy was.
According to Merrill, growing up under a narcissistic mother and with parents who often became angry, he developed the habit of staying out of sight when things got chaotic.
‘At 19, I felt quite powerless. I understood that I shouldn’t provoke him. Instead, I needed to calm things down and make it seem as if everything was fine.’
Gacy asked Merrill if he ‘trusted him’ and when Merrill agreed, took off the handcuffs.
Inside the house, he led him and they shared beers and strong marijuana cigarettes. Once more, Gacy handcuffed Merrill and pulled him along the hallway.
Merrill writes: ‘He put this homemade contraption around my neck. It had ropes and pulleys, and it went around my back and through my handcuffed hands in a way that if I struggled, I would choke. I did at one point and started to lose air. He stuck a gun in my mouth.
Later, he violated me in the bedroom. I realized if I resisted, my chances of success were slim. I didn’t panic or shout. In truth, I felt a strange pity for him, as though he didn’t truly wish to act in such a manner but couldn’t help himself. We had been there for quite some time. Eventually, I sensed he was growing tired. Suddenly, he said, “I’ll take you back home.
Gacy left him near the spot where he initially found him around 5 a.m. He handed Merrill his contact information, suggesting they might meet up again in the future.
Merrill discarded the figure into the toilet and washed up. Instead of dialing the police, he vowed to himself that he would overcome this predicament. He decided not to let his contentment be tethered to that house anymore.
Merrill learned about Gacy’s arrest for the first time when he read a headline in the Chicago Sun-Times: “Bodies Discovered at Suburban Location” – this headline included a map showing the Cumberland exit on the Kennedy Expressway, which was the same spot where Gacy had previously taken him.
He called the paper and told shocked staff ‘that guy raped me’ but when he was asked for his name, hung up due to fear his father – who was a sports writer at the publication – would find out.
Looking at Gacy’s disturbing photograph in the newspaper left Merrill deeply affected, leading him to relocate to New York City on his 21st birthday and subsequently enroll at NYU.
Being a member of the off-Broadway group Naked Angels turned out to be therapeutic for him, as Merrill (known then as Merrill Holtzman) expressed that it compelled him to express himself. He confided in his closest companions about his past experiences.
He recalled speaking to a Hollywood movie executive about telling the story of his abduction but was asked: ‘That’s how you want to be remembered?’ with Merrill saying: ‘I thought, ‘No, I guess not. That would be tying myself to him.’
After learning that Oprah featured stories about rape victims who forgave their assailants, he came to understand that in order to progress with his own life, he too must find the ability to forgive Gacy.
He also forgave his parents and said the lessons ‘I learned at home saved my life that night.’
Merrill is telling a remarkable story through his solo performance titled “The Save,” which ran at the Electric Lodge theater in Los Angeles, from October 25. He describes this experience as therapeutic for him, following years of grappling with the incident of assault.
For the past 23 years, Merrill has been in a loving partnership with his spouse. Now, he confesses that he’s discovered genuine joy in this relationship, as well as taking care of his beloved pets, a dog and a cat.
John Wayne Gacy is known as one of the most notorious serial killers ever documented. In 1978, authorities discovered the remains of 26 victims hidden beneath his residence. Eight corpses that were initially unidentified were exhumed for identification in 2011, and five of these individuals still remain unnamed to this day.
Previously highly respected within his community, John Wayne Gacy had also donned the role of Pogo the Clown and Patches the Clown, entertaining at children’s hospitals and charity events.
The serial killer was born in Chicago and was married to Marlynn Myers, with whom he had two children, from 1964 to 1969.
The couple moved to Iowa, where Gacy agreed to manage Myers’ father’s KFC franchises.
After Gacy was given a 10-year prison sentence for committing oral sodomy on a 15-year-old boy, Myers chose to file for divorce. However, Gacy ended up serving just 18 months out of the entire 10-year term.
In 1970, he founded the construction firm known as PDM Contractors. Later on, this company was instrumental in bringing him to his last victim, a 15-year-old girl who worked at a drugstore that PDM had renovated.
Gacy had led the teenager to his house by promising him a job.
That evening, it was his mother who declared him missing, while Des Plaines Police Lieutenant Joe Kozenczak found out that Gacy was the last person known to be with him, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.
He was questioned by police and released.
10 days following the murder of Piest, Gacy was apprehended. This occurred when law enforcement noticed him passing marijuana to a gas station attendant, and it wasn’t long before they began uncovering the extent of his severe criminal activities.
He was married to Carole Hoff, whom he had dated in high school, from 1972 to 1976.
He was politically active and was named the precinct captain for Norwood Park Township.
Since 1975, he has been overseeing the annual Polish Constitution Day Parade in Chicago. In 1978, during his role, he had the opportunity to meet and take a photograph with then-First Lady Rosalynn Carter, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.
Gacy tortured and raped 26-year-old Jeffrey Rignall in 1978, but Rignall managed to get away.
During his testimony at Gacy’s trial a few years later, Rignall, who identified himself as bisexual, became so emotionally overwhelmed that he vomited and was escorted away from the courtroom in a state of near-hysteria, as reported by the Associated Press and published in the Gadsden Times in February 1980.
According to Rignall, I got struck on the face, either by a dish towel or a piece of cloth, and it gave off a chilly sensation. Immediately after, I felt like there was a swarming bee in my head, causing me to lose consciousness. He further mentioned that he’s been undergoing regular psychiatric care since this incident occurred.
He was orally and anally raped and left by a statue in Chicago’s Lincoln Park, Rignall recounted in his book 29 Below.
The horrific nature of Gacy’s criminal acts left the entire country stunned, and he was put to death at the Stateville Correctional Center in Illinois in 1994, following over a decade on death row.
2022 Netflix series “Conversations with a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes” detailed the murder rampage perpetrated by John Wayne Gacy.
