Holly Marie Combs gives a heartfelt tribute to former ‘Charmed’ co-star Shannen Doherty

As a dedicated cinephile with a deep appreciation for the behind-the-scenes stories of my favorite shows and movies, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Shannen Doherty. Her untimely death at the young age of 51 after her long battle with breast cancer is a loss that leaves a hollow space in the hearts of not just her fans, but also her colleagues and loved ones.

On Monday, Holly Marie Combs paid an emotional homage to her deceased “Charmed” colleague Shannen Doherty.

The 50-year-old actor shared a post on Instagram calling Doherty “my better half of 31 years.”

In the depths of my heart, there’s an empty space, and I struggle to draw a full breath. A piece of you is absent, yet I recall precisely what words would soothe me from you. You’ll persist in me and our shared children, nurturing their determination and pride. They will carry on your indomitable spirit and unwavering attitude, come rain or shine. Your flame shall continue to burn brightly within them and the countless other souls you touched with love and guidance.

Doherty, recognized for portraying Brenda Walsh on “Beverly Hills, 90210,” passed away following a long fight against breast cancer. In 2015, she went public with her diagnosis, disclosing in a lawsuit that her health insurance coverage had expired in 2014, leading to challenges in receiving prompt treatment.

In the hit TV show “Charmed,” which ran from 1998 to 2006, Holly Marie Combs and Alicia McKenzie Doherty portrayed sisters Piper and Prue Halliwell. Sharing the screen with them was Alyssa Milano as Phoebe Halliwell, the eldest sister. The siblings’ captivating on-screen relationship extended off-set, a connection that Combs emphasized in her interviews.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I penned down these heartfelt words: “A relentless warrior till the very end. An unwavering supporter. A steadfast guardian. A cherished confidante,” I wrote about her. “You showed me the essence of familial bonds. You are, and always will be, my dearest sister. My love for you is boundless.”

“I’ve always admired the depth and uniqueness of your relationship with Holly, Combs. It’s challenging yet filled with love, silliness, wildness, softness, and toughness. Watching you two together is a reminder that true love exists. I’m deeply sorry for your loss. We all hold you in our hearts during this difficult time, and you are loved.”

Sarah Michelle Gellar, my acting colleague and dear friend, paid tribute to Doherary on Facebook, reminiscing about their 30-year bond.

The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actor frequently reminds herself that the pain is bearable because of the immense love experienced. Above all, Shan holds a great affection for animals, particularly dogs. In her honor, let’s contribute to our preferred animal charities. This could be through monetary donations, visiting local shelters to provide comfort and care to shelter animals, or simply spreading awareness by tagging them on social media. Knowing this would bring joy (and that contagious laugh) to our cherished one.

Prior to her passing, Doherty had agreed to participate in Combs’ and ex-“Charmed” cast members Drew Fuller and Brian Krause’s podcast, titled “The House of Halliwell: A Charmed Rewatch.” The initial episode dropped on July 8, addressing the possibility of a reboot and how Prue’s character might fit in. In the description for the second episode, “Shannen’s Magic Continues,” it was disclosed that five episodes had been recorded with Doherty before her unfortunate demise.

“This show, this character, this podcast meant so much to Shannen she couldn’t wait to share it with Charmed fans everywhere,” the description said. “We want to honor her memory and fulfill Shannen’s wishes by airing the first five episodes she recorded before her passing.”
