If you’re not familiar with Holly Humberstone, you’re in for a treat. While she doesn’t release albums very often, the ones she has released are consistently fantastic. She’s forging her own path and isn’t trying to be Taylor Swift, and that’s a good thing.
Humberstone creates catchy pop songs with beautiful, slightly sad melodies, but they don’t leave you feeling down. While her music isn’t always upbeat, it’s incredibly energizing and makes you feel hopeful about the future.
She solidified this idea when she performed on Saturday Night Live UK, closing out the first season of the show. Her performance suggested the UK version will consistently feature stronger musical guests than the American Saturday Night Live. Every musician who performed on the UK stage was exceptional, and Beaumaris Humberstone was no exception.
Holly Humberstone brings the very goods during her Saturday Night Live UK performance
“To Love Somebody”
The song features cheerful pop melodies, and while the lyrics surprisingly begin with a description of a car crash, it’s undeniably catchy. It’s a fairly standard pop track – not particularly groundbreaking – but ultimately, music is simply good or bad, and this song by Humberstone is definitely a success.
The new album, Cruel World, is strong overall. The song only falters briefly in the middle with an extra, unnecessary section. But if you’re not singing along by the end, something might be wrong!
“White Noise”
So, for her second song, Humberstone went with something a bit more classic, playing a track from her latest album. It hasn’t been released as a single yet, but honestly, it feels like it will be soon. If not, that’s cool too – it’s awesome she’s digging into some deeper cuts for us!
This pop song, which features a lot of synthesizers, is similar in style to “To Love Somebody.” American listeners, and artists like Taylor Swift, would likely find it familiar. However, the song isn’t particularly memorable because it sounds quite generic and like many others already out there.
The song isn’t bad, but it’s a bit too generic and doesn’t really stand out among other popular pop tracks. It’s pleasant enough while it’s playing, but not particularly memorable.
