Nicole Kidman returns to our television screens with the chilling new mystery series titled “Holland“, a show that promises to leave you second-guessing.
The film focuses on Nancy Vandergroot, a teacher and homemaker who seems to have a picture-perfect life in Holland, Michigan. Married to Fred, the story suggests that their seemingly harmonious marriage, where they never argue and choose to “let things pass,” might be a carefully crafted facade.

Holland ending explained: What is Fred really up to?
When Nancy initially senses that Fred might be engaged in some secret activity, she investigates the room where they both have been constructing a large model town with their son Harry. She discovers a box of Polaroid film but no developed photographs, which leads her to speculate it could contain intimate photos of Fred with his suspected lover.
Eager to uncover the mysterious photographs, Nancy enlists Dave for assistance in secretly accessing Fred’s office, believing it to be their hiding place. As predicted, she locates the images, yet most of them depict unfamiliar houses, leaving her puzzled.
In the future, when Fred attends a three-day meeting in Greenville, Nancy discovers some unusual items – handcuffs, underwear, and dog treats – in his hotel room. Suspecting an affair, she decides to let Dave monitor Fred while she returns home to take care of Harry.
Nancy reexamines the miniature town and locates a structure from the pictures she previously viewed: a house labeled as “Lacey Anne,” the “Bologna Queen.” Following her investigation, she discovers the actual Lacey, who reveals that Lacey was killed three years prior.
Simultaneously, Dave observes Fred conversing with a lady in Greenville and unexpectedly finds him committing a murder (by diverting her dogs’ attention using those treats).
It’s revealed that each zip code in Nancy’s investigation of Fred’s architectural blueprints corresponds to locations where young women were tragically slain. Consequently, Fred’s planned town serves as a chilling symbol of every life he’s taken clandestinely throughout his years.
Previously in Greenville, Fred pursued Dave in an effort to prevent him from disclosing everything, yet this action resulted in Dave using Fred’s very own knife to wound him. Stricken, Fred tumbled into a nearby lake, while Dave returned to Nancy, fabricating the story that Fred had chosen to depart on his own accord.
Dave encourages Nancy to also depart from Holland, but she’s hesitant because disclosing everything could negatively impact Harry’s life. Instead, she suggests they continue to keep their actions a secret, saying, “That’s what we do – we hide it.
To Fred’s surprise and Dave’s dismay, it turns out that Fred isn’t actually deceased as Dave had assumed. Instead, Fred makes an appearance back in town during the Tulip Time festival. In a nearby motel, Nancy is seen with Harry, but when Dave arrives, hoping to convince Nancy to contact the police about Fred, a physical altercation unfolds. The conflict results in a television falling, striking Dave on the head.
In simpler terms, when Fred shows up at the motel and attempts to pressure Nancy into returning home with him, he isn’t offering any real assistance. Instead, he subtly tries to control her actions by saying something like, “I didn’t overstep my boundaries, but you did,” aware that Nancy has plans to leave with Dave.
Nancy, I strongly believe this could be beneficial for us right now since we’re in this journey together. It presents an opportunity for us to work as a team once more. You know, I don’t identify with those actions; the genuine me is here with you and Harry, just as the authentic you is present with me now.
Fred hopes Nancy will consent to starting over, pretending like nothing has transpired between them. However, unbeknownst to Fred, Nancy currently possesses the gun that Dave had at the motel.
In a heated moment, Nancy exclaims to Fred, “I won’t confine you in one of your tiny dwellings,” as she takes aim. However, her shot misses the mark, severely injuring Fred on his left cheek and ear, but she ultimately ends his life by brutally attacking him with a clog.
Nancy returns to their hotel room, but finds Dave absent, a circumstance that hopefully implies he’s not deceased. It’s more probable though, that he’s had a change of heart about his stay in Holland, Michigan – and it’s hard not to sympathize with him.
For Nancy and Harry, the following events hinge on how optimistic we are about their ability to conceal Fred’s mysterious secret effectively.
Holland is now available to watch on Prime Video.
