The critically acclaimed medical drama ER, known for featuring George Clooney and Sherry Stringfield, will soon be available on Netflix. The series, which originally ran from 1994 to 2009, is part of Netflix’s ‘Worth the Wait’ collection and follows the lives of doctors and nurses working in the busy emergency room of Cook County General Hospital.
During its 15 seasons, ER received numerous awards, including a BAFTA, Golden Globe, SAG Award, and Primetime Emmy. Created by the late Michael Crichton, the show is the second-longest-running primetime medical drama in American television history, surpassed only by Grey’s Anatomy.
The fourth season, which began in 1994, solidified the show’s main cast. Anthony Edwards played Dr. Mark Greene, George Clooney was Dr. Doug Ross, and Sherry Stringfield played Dr. Susan Lewis. Noah Wyle joined as medical student John Carter, and Eriq La Salle starred as Dr. Peter Benton.

Over its 15 seasons, ER was known for frequently changing its cast, with actors joining, leaving, and taking on bigger roles. The show launched or featured the careers of many well-known actors, including Julianna Margulies, Gloria Reuben, Laura Innes, Maria Bello, Alex Kingston, Maura Tierney, Mekhi Phifer, Parminder Nagra, Linda Cardellini, John Stamos, and Angela Bassett.
Michael Crichton’s website reveals that he aimed for a unique approach when he first conceived of ER in 1974. He wrote a movie resembling a documentary, depicting a full day in a hospital emergency room. While Crichton believed the script was excellent, studios rejected it, considering it too complex, disorganized, and fast-paced.

It remained on the shelf for nineteen years, occasionally taken down for updates and reviewed by various studios and networks, only to be rejected each time. Eventually, NBC decided to create a TV pilot, which ultimately led to the show becoming a full series.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in 2022, George Clooney reflected on how his five seasons on ER (which ended in 1999) fundamentally changed his career. He explained that the show remains special to him because of the lasting friendships he formed with the cast and crew.
I hosted Tony Edwards and his wife, Mare Winningham, at my place in Italy a few weeks back. I’m still very close with Julianna Margulies, Noah Wyle, and Eriq La Salle – they’re great friends, and I consider working with them to have been an incredible experience.

Fans adore ER, and many have shared their enthusiasm on IMDb. One viewer declared it “will live long in TV history, and deservedly so,” while another simply called it “the best medical drama EVER!!!”
A third viewer praised the show as fast-paced, emotionally gripping, and full of suspense, adding that the cast was phenomenal. They highlighted the incredible talent involved, including George Clooney, and noted how realistic yet accessible the show is. While packed with drama, it also offers moments of humor.
ER will land on Netflix.
