I’m so excited! They just released a first look at the second season of Ludwig, the BBC detective show with David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin, and we finally get a peek at some of the new faces joining the cast!
The second season will continue the story right after the first, again following John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor (played by Mitchell). This time, however, he’s working as a Crime Scene Consultant, teaming up with DCI Russell Carter (Dipo Ola) to solve crimes for the Cambridge Police and use his exceptional puzzle-solving abilities.
However, the story also reveals that John’s twin brother remains missing. Now that John works at the police station, he’s not allowed to use any police resources to search for him or find out what his brother was working on.

Despite the recent setback, John and his sister-in-law Lucy (played by Maxwell Martin) haven’t given up. The show’s description hints at a fresh start, saying, “One disguise may be over, but another is just beginning.”
Season two brings back the original cast, including Dylan Hughes as Henry Betts-Taylor, Dorothy Atkinson as DCS Carol Shaw, Ralph Ineson as Chief Constable Ziegler, and Karl Pilkington as DI Matt Neville.

Season two is adding some exciting new faces! Mark Bonnar, known from Line of Duty and Dept. Q, will play Gareth Fisher, a newspaper editor. Sian Clifford, famous for Fleabag, joins the cast as a local MP. Rounding out the new additions are Ben Ashenden (Black Mirror) and Rumi Sutton (After the Flood).

Back in January, Mitchell hinted at some exciting new characters coming in season two of Ludwig during an interview with Radio Times. He described them as “brilliant.”
He described the new actors, Ashenden and Sutton, who will be joining the police team in the drama, as “brilliant and very funny.” He added that they have a strong chemistry together and will bring comedic relief, though the show’s overall storyline won’t change.

Speaking about his role, Mitchell described Bonnar – who recently appeared on the BBC’s Celebrity Traitors – as a funny and somewhat unlucky newspaper editor. He called it a fantastic part to play.
The comedy series Ludwig premiered in September 2024 and quickly became the BBC’s most popular scripted show that year. It had the biggest launch for a comedy in at least six years, reaching over 9.5 million viewers within 28 days, according to the BBC.
Fans will be excited to see that more episodes are getting closer…
Ludwig is available to stream on BBC iPlayer, and season 2 is on the way.
