Hit $217M Horror Smile That Kicked Off a Franchise Is Officially Heading to Hulu (But It Comes With a Twist)

A highly-rated horror movie from 2022 is now available on a new streaming service, but there’s a potential issue that could disappoint fans.

As a movie buff, I’m excited to share that you won’t have to wait much longer to stream ! It’s landing on a new streaming service on February 16th. But heads up, Hulu users – if you’re planning to watch the new sequel after enjoying the first one, you’ll need to find it elsewhere.

Parker Finn wrote and directed this film, which centers around a therapist whose patient, Laura Weaver (played by Caitlin Stasey, known from Laura Hasn’t Slept), tragically takes her own life in a disturbing manner. Shortly after, the therapist, Rose, is haunted by a mysterious and dangerous force with a history of pushing people to commit terrible acts of violence.

In addition to Bacon, the film Smile features Kyle Gallner as Joel, Rose’s ex-boyfriend and a police officer, Jessie T. Usher as her fiancé Trevor, and Robin Weigert as her therapist, Dr. Madeline Northcott. Kal Penn plays Rose’s boss, Dr. Morgan Desai, and Rob Morgan portrays Robert Talley, one of the few people who survived an encounter with the entity from Smile. The cast also includes Perry Strong, Dora Kiss, Sara Kapner, Kevin Keppy, Marti Matulis, Nick Arapoglou, Matthew Lamb, Jack Sochet, Gillian Zinser, and Judy Reyes.

Released in 2022, the movie Smile was a major financial success, earning over $217.4 million worldwide on a budget of just $17 million. It also received several award nominations, including nods for Best Movie and Most Frightened Performance at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards, and Best Horror Film at the 51st Saturn Awards.

The movie Smile has been very well-received by both critics and viewers. Currently, it has an 80% ‘Certified Fresh’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 196 reviews. Audiences have also given it a positive score of 77% on the site, based on over 2,500 ratings.

The Future of the Smile Franchise — Explained

After the first film did well, a sequel, Smile 2, came out in theaters in 2024. While it didn’t make quite as much money as the original—earning $138.1 million worldwide on a $28 million budget—critics and audiences actually liked Smile 2 even more than the first one.

After the release of Smile 2, the writer and director expressed openness to continuing the franchise, particularly exploring the unsettling and frightening core concepts of the original Smile. Finn mentioned there are many interesting directions future installments could take, as he enjoys the scary and mysterious elements of the film’s premise.

Finn explained that Smile is a way to share deeply personal and meaningful stories about its characters. He wants to ensure the storytelling feels intimate, even if multiple people are connected to the experience. He also hinted that there are still surprises and clever elements yet to be revealed in Smile.

The third installment doesn’t have a release date yet, but it’s currently in development.

Smile will be available for streaming on Hulu on Feb. 16.
