His Dark Materials star Ruth Wilson will record new audiobook versions of fantasy trilogy
As a huge fan of Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” trilogy, I can’t contain my excitement about Ruth Wilson narrating new audiobook versions of this beloved series! I remember devouring Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass in the late 90s, and being utterly captivated by Pullman’s intricate world-building and unforgettable characters.
In 1995, Philip Pullman debuted the initial installment of his “His Dark Materials” series, titled “Northern Lights.” The second book, “The Subtle Knife,” came out in 1997, and the concluding part, “The Amber Spyglass,” was published in 2000. By the end of this captivating trilogy, the protagonists Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry had contributed to the demise of a god and ultimately restored beauty and enchantment to the world through their carnal desires. An intriguing blend of fantasy adventure unfolded.
Years later, I was disappointed when a movie based on the first book in the beloved series, “The Golden Compass,” didn’t resonate with audiences enough to continue the story on the big screen. But then, HBO stepped in and gave us a three-season TV adaptation of the entire trilogy that I couldn’t get enough of! Dafne Keen brought Lyra to life in an incredible way, Amir Wilson perfectly portrayed Will, and Ruth Wilson masterfully played the ruthless Mrs. Coulter, who was both Lyra’s biological mother and a formidable adversary.
As a dedicated fan of Philip Pullman’s “His Dark Materials” trilogy, I’m absolutely thrilled to hear that the talented actress, Nicole Kidman, will be lending her mellifluous voice to bring these captivating audiobooks to life. Having first fallen in love with Pullman’s intricate world when I read the books years ago, I can only imagine how deeply Nicole must have been enchanted by the themes and complex characters that populate this literary masterpiece.
“I’m thrilled that Ruth Wilson will narrate the new audiobook of ‘His Dark Materials.’ I was captivated by her acting in the TV series, and through our conversations, I discovered her deep commitment to each character. Her voice is naturally alluring, and she brings every nuance and emphasis to life, making the story come alive not only on the page but also in the listener’s ear. I consider myself fortunate to have had her involvement in both the TV adaptation and the audiobook.”
Wilson’s vocal abilities are ideal for audiobooks, making this a suitable selection. However, it’s important to note that an audiobook adaptation of “His Dark Materials” already exists, narrated by Pullman with a complete cast. This version will continue to be accessible.
Phil Pulman is working on a fresh trilogy named “The Book of Dust,” providing further insights into Lyra’s escapades. The initial two volumes, titled “La Belle Sauvage” and “The Secret Commonwealth,” have been published, with a third installment to follow. HBO has yet to produce a TV series based on these books, but the future is unpredictable.
