Hiroyuki Sanada, a popular actor, hinted to fans that the next season of the successful FX show will have even more action. He also shared his experience filming Mortal Kombat 2, where he’s returning as the character Scorpion.
In a recent interview, Sanada discussed the future of Shogun, explaining that the show will advance ten years after the first season’s ending. He mentioned his character hasn’t found peace yet, requiring further conflict to establish it in Japan, promising more action, strategic maneuvering, and deeper family storylines than the first season. What began as a limited series is now being developed for a second and third season due to its overwhelming popularity.
Last year, Shogun made history as the first series in the Japanese language to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. It also achieved a record for the most awards won by a single season of any television show. The show’s success continued with four Golden Globe Awards and a Peabody Award. Actor Hiroyuki Sanada explained that while the story is fictional, they strived for authenticity, drawing inspiration from historical events while still creating a unique and original work of entertainment.
We really wanted to create a genuine portrayal of our culture and history with the show, and I think we succeeded. Both the audience and critics responded very positively. Shogun significantly broadened understanding between Eastern and Western cultures, and that’s what ultimately made it so successful – it built a connection between the two.
In the series Shogun, the central figure is a formidable warlord who governs the Kanto region. He comes from the Minowara clan, a family that once held the title of shogun and ruled Japan. This character is known for both his intelligence and his skill in military and political maneuvering. The main cast also features Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Takehiro Hira, Tommy Bastow, and Fumi Nikaido.
The second season of Shogun will feature Asami Mizukawa as Aya, alongside Masataka Kubota as Hyuga and Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu. Jun Kunimura joins the cast as Goda, and Takaaki Enoki will play Lord Ito – a character who appeared previously, played by Eisuke Sasai in Season 1.
Sanada Teams Up With His Shogun Co-Star in Mortal Kombat 2
Although a second season of Shogun doesn’t have a confirmed release date yet, Hiroyuki Sanada has another upcoming project. He’ll be in the Mortal Kombat movie, set to release on May 8, 2026, alongside his Shogun co-star Asano Tadanaobu, who will play Lord Raiden. Sanada has discussed his experience filming Mortal Kombat and praised the film’s diverse cast.
I had a great time filming. Plus, the cast was largely made up of Asian actors, which was fantastic. I’m really pleased to see Asian actors succeeding in this film – it’s another great representation of Asian talent on the world stage.
Season 2 of Shogun will begin filming in January.
