Himmel, a long-time fan favorite, has fallen from the number one spot in the latest character popularity poll. He was surprisingly surpassed after a vote count exceeding 12 million.
According to recent reports, Genau has taken the top spot in the latest Frieren character popularity poll, receiving 1,396,535 votes. This narrowly beat out Himmel, who received 1,327,500 votes. It’s the first time Himmel hasn’t been number one, ending his two-time winning streak. The complete top 10 list is available below.

The recent poll received a record-breaking 12.7 million votes, showing the series remains popular after its second season. A particularly surprising result was the significant jump in votes for Genau, who wasn’t even in the top 30 last time. Aura came in third with over a million votes, followed by Frieren and Macht. Serie, Stark, and Fern also performed well, and even less prominent characters – like “Demon Attacking the Rufen Region 2” and the “Bought Skeleton” – managed to break into the top 10.
The third round of voting took place from March 8th to March 29th, 2026. A total of 140 characters and items were up for votes, including main characters like Frieren, Fern, Himmel, and Stark, as well as minor characters and memorable objects from the series. Popular choices included Stark’s Jumbo Berry Special sundae and the Bought Skeleton, which both received a lot of support even though they didn’t appear much in the show.
The first popularity contest was held in September 2022 to celebrate the manga reaching its 100th chapter and the announcement of an anime adaptation, and Himmel won by a large margin. A second contest followed in March 2024, coinciding with the end of the anime’s first season, and Himmel won again, with Aura coming in second place.
Genau has quickly become more popular, likely because of his increased presence in Season 2. Episodes 6 and 7, which aired while fans were voting, revealed a lot about his character, especially when he openly admitted he doesn’t see himself as ‘good’ due to his practical and sometimes harsh fighting style. His dedication to protecting the Northern Lands, even if it means making tough choices, sets him apart from others.
I’ve been noticing a shift in fan favorites lately. While Himmel is still incredibly popular, people are really connecting with Genau and her more realistic, unique approach to being a hero. We haven’t heard anything official yet, but the popularity contests usually happen every two years, so I’m guessing the next one will be in 2028, potentially with results revealed around October 2027.
