Henry Cavill suffered an injury during preparations for the highly anticipated revival of “Highlander”. Consequently, the film’s production has been delayed until at least the next year.
According to a report by Deadline, it was mentioned that Henry Cavill sustained an injury during his training phase prior to production. However, they did not provide any further details about the nature of his injury.
The movie, which has been in production with multiple directors and various lead actors over several years, will now be directed by Chad Stahelski, known for John Wick. However, due to Cavill’s injury, Deadline reports that the filming is unlikely to start until early next year at the earliest.

Beyond Cavill, the revamped Highlander also boasts Russell Crowe, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, and Dave Bautista as part of its star-studded cast.
As a devoted cinephile, I can’t help but reminisce about my first encounter with the original Highlander back in 1986. It was then that this unique franchise, known for its enigmatic twist on immortality, made its way into Hollywood history.
The intriguing premise revolves around an obscure race of eternal warriors, locked in an endless cycle of sword fights to the death. When one falls, their power is transferred to the victor – a fascinating concept that sets it apart from other action franchises.
These immortals, although not officially titled Highlanders, have come to be known by this name due to the movie’s title. The story goes that they engage in these fatal duels until only one remains standing – quite an intriguing premise for a cinematic journey!
Intriguingly enough, at the culmination of the initial Highlander film, an unexpected success story was born! Consequently, they went ahead and produced four follow-ups and numerous television adaptations. It’s quite baffling, isn’t it? (Fun fact: The first sequel, Highlander II: The Quickening, is infamously known for being one of the worst movies ever made. After all, who would have thought a continuation about a battle between immortals, which was supposedly concluded in the previous film, could even be considered?)
Talks about a new Highlander film have resurfaced repeatedly since the late 2000s. Directors such as Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and Justin Lin were connected with the project at different times, along with actors like Ryan Reynolds. As far back as 2021, there were rumors that Henry Cavill would take on the lead role. This suggests it could be five years or more from his initial involvement to the film’s release-if we’re fortunate.
The Highlander reboot doesn’t have a confirmed release date.
The 10 Best Action Movies of the Last 10 Years (2015-2024)

10. Avengement (2019)
Over the past 15 years, there’s no actor who has shined brighter in gritty action movies than Scott Adkins. He’s starred in big-budget Hollywood films (like playing one of Mads Mikkelsen’s henchmen in Doctor Strange), but his career has primarily been in direct-to-video and now direct-to-streaming action thrillers. A perfect embodiment of his straightforward, hard-hitting style can be seen in the movie Avengement. In this film, Adkins, working with frequent collaborator director Jesse V. Johnson, portrays an ex-convict on a highly personal quest for revenge against his own brother. Despite its somewhat humorous title, let me assure you, this is a raw and gritty little movie that’s well worth watching.

9. The Fall Guy (2024)
In a way reminiscent of an aged muscle car with faulty brakes, “The Fall Guy” gains momentum and seldom lets up. It possesses an invigorating spirit similar to a Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland musical where they say “let’s put on a show!”. This heartfelt tribute to the enchantment of cinema leaves you yearning to create your own movie or simply watch one.
While the term “movie magic” may be misleading, when a film captivates its audience like “The Fall Guy”, it appears magical. Behind this magic lies both illusion and tireless effort, much of which is attributed to the unsung heroes behind the scenes – the craftspeople that the show champions. At one instance, Emily Blunt’s character Jody Moreno tells Ryan Gosling’s Colt Seavers that she wants their action sequences to convey the sentiment “How far would you go for the one you love?” If we consider ‘the one’ as the euphoria of exceptional cinema, this becomes the driving force behind this highly enjoyable film.

8. Rebel Ridge (2024)
In 2024, Aaron Pierre’s performance in the gritty action movie “Rebel Ridge” was anticipated to generate significant buzz within the film industry, yet it didn’t quite reach that level despite being one of a dozen new releases on Netflix in September. However, this does not diminish Pierre’s remarkable portrayal or Jeremy Saulnier’s continued prowess as a director, delivering another top-notch action movie that combines the essence of “First Blood” with a modern-day twist.
Saulnier’s latest work stands out in the action genre by having its protagonist, a Marine martial arts instructor unfairly targeted by a corrupt police chief, opt for non-violent resolution methods whenever possible. Although he is not always successful in avoiding conflict, the audience will surely appreciate these attempts at deescalation.

7. John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum (2019)

6. Mission: Impossible — Fallout (2018)
Discussing the intricate, turn-on-its-head storylines and death-defying feats in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, it’s safe to say that some of the most jaw-dropping stunts in the series have been showcased here. Director Christopher McQuarrie truly outdid himself, surpassing even his impressive work on Rogue Nation. However, all these spectacular elements are merely embellishments for what sets Mission: Impossible – Fallout apart.
In an era of heavily cynical popular entertainment, Tom Cruise stands out as a genuinely sincere artist. He could have relied on stuntmen or technology to execute the actions we see, but he chooses not to because he is deeply invested in his films and dedicated to satisfying his audience. This unwavering passion permeates every shot of this guilt-free pleasure – a film that is both incredibly entertaining and undeniably earnest. As evidence, consider that Cruise injured his ankle while performing the stunt depicted in this image, yet he completed the shot and it was included in the final product.

5. Bad Black (2016)
In this high-energy, exhilarating action film from Uganda, “Bad Black,” the effects might be rough around the edges, but it’s far from being a comedic disaster like Tommy Wiseau’s work. Instead, it’s more like a rush of adrenaline directly to your heart. Director Nabwana I.G.G. kicks off the movie with a thrilling 10-minute chase and shootout in the streets of Wakaliga, and the action doesn’t let up for the rest of the hour. The editing is fast-paced yet easy to follow, the stunts are remarkably acrobatic, the depiction of life in Uganda is captivating, and the joy exhibited by everyone involved is utterly contagious. To sum it up, this movie isn’t so bad that it’s good – it’s so enjoyable that it’s almost like watching “Bad Black” itself.

4. John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
The John Wick series might have ended with Chapter 4, but it undeniably peaked – quite literally so in the film’s finale, where Keanu Reeves as John Wick battles his way up a massive staircase leading to Paris’ Sacré-Cœur church. Spanning three hours and packed with action sequences worthy of multiple movies, John Wick: Chapter 4 sees its protagonist traversing the globe in search of a means to put an end to his relentless war with the High Table. Reeves yet again demonstrates his ability to portray a graceful and thoughtful anti-hero, this time alongside the most impressive cast of action stars in the series to date: Scott Adkins, Laurence Fishburne, Hiroyuki Sanada, Shamier Anderson, and notably Donnie Yen as the blind swordsman/assassin Caine. I can’t fathom how Reeves and director Chad Stahelski could surpass this accomplishment, but I would be delighted to witness them attempting another masterpiece.

3. Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
It’s surprising that a sequel to “Top Gun” might seem less vital in the 2020s, but against all odds, director Joseph Kosinski and actor-producer Tom Cruise managed to create a sequel that was not just enjoyable and action-packed, but also resonated with our contemporary world. Despite not delving into politics, it certainly highlighted the appeal of visually stunning content best experienced on a large screen. This could be considered a daring stance in today’s era.

2. RRR (2022)
In a nutshell, the film “RRR” – an Indian production – overwhelms your brain with a three-hour extravaganza of spectacle, romance, music, and thrilling action scenes. It can be thought of as a modern South Asian adaptation of an old-school John Woo action flick, where two extraordinarily powerful men, one being Bheem (N.T. Rama Rao Jr.), a tribal warrior from the Gond tribe, and Rama (Ram Charan), a member of the British Empire’s military, find themselves on opposite sides of the law but end up forming an unlikely friendship due to unforeseen circumstances. The film leaves no stone unturned in its quest to keep audiences engaged, with its unique blend of action and dance sequences that are truly captivating.

1. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
The film “Mad Max: Fury Road” stands out as the most impressive car chase movie of the past decade and even the entire century. Not only does it deliver incredible action sequences, but its spiritual and biblical undertones are also quite evident.
In essence, it’s a modern retelling of the exodus from Sodom and Gomorrah, with Charlize Theron’s powerful character Imperator Furiosa leading a group of heroic women on a quest for a new Eden. Tom Hardy, portraying Max, serves as their unconventional guide through the desert, helping them find safety, albeit unable to join them.
George Miller’s masterful chaos demonstrates that action movies can indeed be both exhilarating and intelligent. If anyone argues otherwise, you should confidently respond, “That’s nonsense.
