High Potential season 1, episode 5 recap and review: "Croaked"

As a seasoned gamer of life and TV shows, I can confidently say that High Potential is one of the rare gems that truly hits the sweet spot. In this week’s episode 5, our team was drawn into an intriguing murder mystery, only to uncover a tangled web involving exotic animal trafficking and adoption.

Normally, firing at a police officer leads to significant issues. However, this wasn’t the case for Morgan during season 1, episode 5 of “High Potential.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for High Potential season 1, episode 5.

In a thrilling turn of events, I found myself immersed in the latest installment of “High Potential,” where our dynamic team was drawn into the chilling investigation of the murder of an exotic animal veterinarian. What initially appeared to be an isolated incident soon spiraled into something far grander, uncovering layers of trafficking, adoption schemes, and a myriad of other intriguing complexities.

Let’s discuss Morgan preventing Karadec there, though. It was for his own safety. Karadec was reaching for what Morgan suspected was a soap dispenser laced with poison. That poison originated from a frog, which, as Morgan deduced, had been placed in the dispenser. Poor Fred! Rest in peace, friend!

Instead, the poison wouldn’t have led to his demise, but rather paralysis. To prevent this, Morgan opted to use a tranquilizer gun instead. Given that the gun was meant for a snake, it wasn’t overly harmful in this case. Moreover, he didn’t bear any resentment towards her because the alternative was paralysis.

When a vet isn’t just a vet in High Potential season 1, episode 5

The inquiry into the murder underwent several twists and turns initially hinting at retribution against the veterinarian due to deceased pets. However, despite many pet owners being distraught over the vet’s decision to euthanize their animals without an opportunity for farewell, they were not responsible for her death.

Discovering this, we learned that the veterinarian was secretly trading exotic pets on the underground market. It seems there’s a demand for everything illicit, and it was revealed that this vet would fraudulently euthanize animals before selling them instead. Fortunately, the owner of one such precious spider was eventually reunited with his cherished pet.

It appeared that the vet was selling animals to finance a new home for her beloved companion – her dearest friend. This assumption initially held, leading to an opportune moment for Oz during the interrogation, where he managed to coax the friend’s spouse into admitting to the murder.

It was too easy, though. This isn’t to say that Oz couldn’t be a great interrogator, but the husband was clearly covering for his wife. Morgan realized that the son wasn’t biologically the friend’s and her husband’s. It was the vet’s son from when she was a teenager. She wanted the house for the son, faking a relationship with the friend to get that.

Yes, the friend killed the vet. Case closed.

Please don’t change Morgan and Karadec’s friendship in High Potential

It seems clear to me that Morgan and Karadec will eventually discover their feelings for each other in this storyline. However, I hope their friendship remains purely platonic, as it is something I cherish deeply.

On an unpleasant date, I wasn’t annoyed when Morgan arrived with case details instead. The way Karadec effortlessly pretended to be his wife suggested they function excellently as friends. They resemble siblings, and a TV series would greatly benefit from portraying such a relationship. It’s refreshing to see two individuals who can collaborate effectively without romantic entanglements or the cliché of being “twin souls” or “soulmates”. Instead, we need to show how they instinctively understand each other and exchange ideas, creating an intriguing dynamic for the audience.

Frankly speaking, I’m keen to explore more about Morgan and Ludo in their storyline. It’s undeniable that there’s still a strong bond between them, which is intriguing given the unusual reasons for their separation. Despite his occasional immaturity, Ludo demonstrates remarkable fatherhood skills, being deeply involved in the lives of his kids, including Ava. Although he might be playing the role of a nanny right now for financial gain, let’s not forget that he is, at heart, a devoted dad. He consistently supports Morgan’s need to work and never makes her feel guilty about it. This kind of character deserves more screen time, in my opinion.

To keep things friendly, let’s avoid delving into their dynamic. They make a great pair as pals.

Morgan shows growth as a parent

One aspect of the show I genuinely enjoy is watching Morgan evolve as a parent. The learning process is ongoing, and I must say, parenting a pre-teen is quite distinct from nurturing a child. Believe me, having a tween at home has certainly taken me by surprise!

As Morgan navigates her way through, we witness her journey of learning. Initially, she follows some misguided suggestions and engages in snooping. Later on, she recognizes that these actions were wrong and chooses to confide in Ava about the birth control pills.

Sharing such moments with our daughters, especially during their teenage years, carries immense significance. As mothers, we’ve walked similar paths. Lectures and abstinence lessons might not have been effective back then, often leading to unintended consequences like more teen pregnancies. Instead, discussing birth control, emphasizing its numerous advantages beyond just contraception, helped foster a stronger bond between Ava and Morgan. It’s relationships like these that we should strive to cultivate more of.

Truthfully, what stands out about “High Potential” is its refreshing approach to storytelling, steering clear of common tropes. The narratives are captivating, yet it’s the intricate character interactions that draw me back to this series time and again.

High Potential airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on ABC. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
