High Potential season 1, episode 3 recap and review: "Dirty Rotten Scoundrel"

As a dedicated fan of High Potential, I must say that this show never ceases to surprise and engage me with its intricate plots and compelling characters. In episode 3 of season 1, “Dirty, Rotten Scoundrel,” we were treated to a captivating tale of murder, deception, and justice.

In the third episode of “High Potential” season 1, it’s evident that Morgan demonstrates the idea that having a high IQ doesn’t necessarily equate to a wealth of common sense. Let’s delve into the events that unfolded in “Dirty, Rotten Scoundrel.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for High Potential season 1, episode 3.

The initial scene of the episode depicted a staged death scenario. A man had met an untimely end due to drowning in a bathtub, yet it was carefully arranged to appear as if he succumbed to natural causes. It didn’t take much time for us to realize that this was indeed a murder. Morgan deduced this because of the peculiar way towels were arranged and the specific material used to clean up the water on the floor.

They needed to determine both who murdered him and the motive behind it, but also uncover the identity of the deceased individual.

Getting the name of the vic in High Potential season 1, episode 3

Initially, the objective was to identify the mystery individual referred to as ‘vic’, since there was no label or name found in the hotel room. However, it wasn’t until Morgan took the evidence back home that she had sufficient time and privacy to thoroughly examine all the details. But, it’s important to note that taking evidence home is generally not allowed or advisable.

As someone with years of experience in law enforcement, I’ve come across many instances where exceptional intelligence doesn’t always equate to common sense. Morgan, my colleague, is a prime example of this phenomenon. She possesses an uncanny ability to analyze and interpret evidence, but her actions sometimes fall short.

“I want to emphasize that I appreciate the fact that she’s learning, and she’s willing to acknowledge her mistakes. However, let’s avoid labeling her as stupid since she doesn’t always think things through. In fact, she admits this herself a couple of times during this episode.

Utilizing the skills of a tailor, the team uncovers that the individual’s full name is Mr. Eduardo. While his first name is Eduardo, he consistently pays in cash. Over time, they manage to discover his surname as well and learn about an alias he uses when he’s being unfaithful to his wife.

Eduardo is doing more than having an affair

Initially, Karadec considers apprehending the mistress when he learns Eduardo is unfaithful to his wife. However, Morgan intervenes, recognizing that the situation doesn’t add up – someone else must be involved in the deceit.

At this point, they delve more into Eduardo’s personal life. However, it wasn’t just a clandestine relationship he was involved in. He was swindling women out of their hard-earned money, and one of his victims was a woman suffering from dementia residing in a care facility. It’s heartbreaking to learn that she fell prey to such manipulation. Yet, this is when it seems apparent to everyone. Aren’t we all able to connect the dots by now? Wasn’t the son the prime suspect for the murder?

It wasn’t until Morgan discovered the unusual method of entry into the hotel room that everyone finally understood what had happened. The murderer apparently climbed up the building’s exterior walls, which left chalk marks as a clue. This type of chalk is often used by mountain climbers, and it turned out that the victim’s son was indeed a climber.

Morgan and Karadec work together to solve the case

Morgan temporarily steps away from her job, but doesn’t stay away for too long. Soto understood that this position was crucial for Morgan, not only for financial reasons. Eventually, Morgan will uncover the truth about Roman due to Soto’s investigations.

Upon Morgan’s return, it’s not unexpected. However, even though there is an initial shock, we witness Morgan influencing Karadec, showing how thoughts can swiftly shift from one subject to another. As Morgan suggests that Karadec couldn’t have acted alone, Karadec echoes the same sentiment regarding the murder.

It was only the woman who we initially believed Eduardo had an affair with, who ended up helping his son. This same woman had been scammed by him as well. By the time she discovered this, all her money had already been taken. Consequently, they both decided to work together and seek justice against him.

The son experiences a touching farewell with his mother, revealing Karadec’s empathy. It appears that he may have a personal connection to dementia or a similar health issue, hinting at a deeper layer in his character. I’m eager to explore more about this enigmatic figure and uncover the secrets of his private life.

Soto delves deeper into Roman’s life in High Potential

Indeed, there were several individual narratives unfolding. One of them revolved around Soto, who learned that Roman had amassed some academic citations before he vanished. The puzzle is gradually becoming clearer now. Interestingly, the stunning mural depicting a phoenix was created in an area infamous for crime in the past. Could it be that Roman witnessed something there? It certainly appears so!

Next is Ava’s narrative, where a male companion resides in her private space, supposedly for studying purposes. One can only hope that a prudent young woman like Ava recognizes the significance of safe sexual practices, given her knowledge of the hardships her mother has faced. She certainly wouldn’t wish the same fate upon herself.

Ludo is giving his all in his parenting role, even though he may not have always made the best decisions with Ava and the rules regarding the door. Like many others, he’s learning as he goes along when it comes to being a parent. He has welcomed Ava into his life and shows incredible kindness towards Morgan, making him an exceptional individual. There are evident reasons why their relationship didn’t last, but they seem to be excellent coparents.

In summary, certain scenes within the episode seemed to lack careful writing. It’s puzzling why Morgan didn’t suspect the dictionary was more significant earlier, given that the little girl had no interest in dictionaries and one would expect it among her toys or books. However, considering the multitude of things occupying Morgan’s mind at this moment, I can understand the oversight for now. If such slips become frequent, though, it may become a concern.
