High-Maintenance
In a recent conversation with Vogue, Hugh Grant humorously referred to his former partner Liz Hurley as someone who requires a lot of attention or care.
For over a decade, from 1987 to 2000, the actor known as The Heretic, aged 64, was romantically involved with a model who was also 59 years old at the time. This pairing grabbed attention when they attended the premiere of Four Weddings and A Funeral in 1994, with Liz donning her iconic safety pin dress on the red carpet.
The bold outfit propelled the celebrity into prominence, and during a chat with his Bridget Jones costar, Renee Zellweger, Hugh disclosed that the ex-pair used to dine with Gianni Versace personally.
He shared that he often dined with Gianni Versace behind the scenes prior to his fashion shows in Milan, and then mentioned that he had demanding girlfriends who appreciated such luxuries.
Renee then joked: ‘Oh, it was the girlfriends. You liar.’
swiftly gained widespread recognition the following day due to her stunning Versace dress, fashioned from a blend of black silk and Lycra, secured with large safety pins and temporarily acquired from their flagship store on Old Bond Street.
Last year, I gleefully opened up about my daring fashion choice in a Disney+ Vogue documentary, revealing the story behind my bold selection for the event and discussing the massive response it triggered.
Or, more casually:
In a chat on Disney+ Vogue last year, I spilled the beans on why I chose that racy number for the nighttime affair and talked about the whirlwind of reactions that followed.
She exclaimed: ‘It seems I was captured in over 800 trillion photos that evening. The following day, our faces graced the headlines of every newspaper, leaving us dumbfounded and asking, “What on earth is going on here?”‘
Initially, I was examining it, wondering “What,” followed by a realization that “Indeed, that dress was quite bold, wasn’t it?
Liz shared how she managed to don such a large designer piece so early in her career, saying: ‘I knew I needed a dress, and someone suggested, “I know someone who runs a PR firm, they might be able to help you.” On the day itself, we called and asked, “Do you have anything?” They replied, “We’ve got just one dress”.’
I replied, “Sure, I’ll take it if I can manage it.” Then, I hopped on the subway to retrieve the dress. It was given to me in a small, white plastic bag.
The actress and model hopped on the subway to collect her iconic, black Versace gown secured with big golden safety pins.
She said: ‘I’d never heard the name Versace before and it looked pretty precarious.
However, I recall bending over to touch my toes and reaching upward, yet nothing shifted. So, I dashed down the steps, and with that, the matter was settled.
She comments: ‘The following day, we found ourselves on the headlines of all the newspapers, and I couldn’t help but exclaim, “What on earth is going on here?”‘
‘I hadn’t really realised how daring a dress it was.’
In the recent past, I found myself reflecting on how my partnership with Hugh played an instrumental role during a critical juncture in my life. Though we’ve moved on from being romantic partners – parting ways amicably back in 2000 – our friendship has remained steadfast.
At the Bazaar At Work summit, she mentioned that her former partner, Hugh Grant, was with her when the incident occurred simultaneously for them.
Similar to myself, he too had put in considerable effort and believed he was progressing satisfactorily, but everything changed once Four Weddings and a Funeral was released – he became an extraordinary sensation overnight.
The movie became incredibly popular, leading to significant changes. I believe our being two greatly contributed to this. In the blink of an eye, we found ourselves under the limelight, and our lives were not prepared for it.
She stated: ‘You lack any safeguards. It was quite startling. The media was significantly more brutal during the 90s and 2000s compared to today. I genuinely feel that individuals are no longer permitted to behave as rudely as they did back then.’
It seems like shared hardships can create a strong connection. Even though he’s usually busy with his family and we don’t spend much time together, he holds a special place in my heart.
Pondering over that unforgettable gown, which she graciously obtained at the eleventh hour from Dean Aslett, then the Chief of Women’s Fashion and Atelier at Versace, Hurley shares that she was taken aback by the extraordinary interest it attracted.
She reminisced, finding it peculiar, as she’d worked for several years and in her thoughts, she considered herself rather well-known – having appeared in various productions.
To those closest to me, I appeared as a success, yet the true nature of being in the limelight remained elusive until it unexpectedly struck my consciousness. This revelation was quite an unsettling experience for my mind.
