Hi-Fri Rush studio saved by PUBG’s Krafton after Microsoft shut down
As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say, this news about Krafton acquiring Tango Gameworks has certainly piqued my interest. Having grown fond of Tango’s unique take on horror and action games, especially their recent gem, Hi-Fi Rush, I am eager to see what Krafton will bring to the table for these talented developers.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m excited to share that Krafton, the powerhouse behind my favorites like PUBG: Battlegrounds and The Callisto Protocol, has recently acquired Tango Gameworks. This studio is renowned for creating gripping games such as The Evil Within series and the upcoming Hi-Fi Rush. Interestingly, Tango was previously closed by Microsoft and ZeniMax Media in May, but the skilled team behind it will now be a part of Krafton’s family. With this acquisition, Krafton not only gains the talent from Tokyo but also the rights to Hi-Fi Rush, which I can’t wait to see unfold!
According to a press statement, Krafton plans to work together with Xbox and ZeniMax in order to ensure a seamless transition at Tango Gameworks. This will enable the skilled team to carry on developing the Hi-Fi Rush intellectual property and explore new projects in the future. Krafton also stated that they aim to support the Tango Gameworks team to uphold their dedication to innovation and provide fans with fresh and engaging experiences.
According to the publisher’s statement, the shift of a developer (from Microsoft to Krafton) won’t affect Tango Gameworks’ current game library, which encompasses titles like “The Evil Within”, “The Evil Within 2”, “Ghostwire: Tokyo”, and the initial version of “Hi-Fi Rush”. Notably, “Hi-Fi Rush” can be played on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
In 2010, Tango Gameworks was established by Shinji Mikami. This studio’s inaugural project, titled “The Evil Within“, was a survival horror game that echoed Mikami’s past work at Capcom. At Capcom, he had led the development of survival horror games such as “Resident Evil“, “Dino Crisis“, and “Resident Evil 4“. In 2021, Tango Gameworks was integrated into Microsoft’s family of studios following ZeniMax’s acquisition by Microsoft. However, Mikami departed from Tango in 2023.
In 2023, the studio experienced significant critical acclaim with “Hi-Fi Rush.” This rhythm-action game was an unexpected launch on Microsoft’s Game Pass platform, and it departed significantly from the grim and violent image that Tango Gameworks had previously established.
Krafton’s recent announcement follows closely on the heels of news from Wolfeye Studio, the former team from Arkane Austin (known for creating games like Prey and Dishonored), who have just unveiled plans for a new first-person action RPG.
Microsoft revealed in May their intention to shut down three studios that fall under the Bethesda Softworks group: Arkane Austin, which is working on Redfall, Alpha Dog Studios behind Mighty Doom, and Tango Gameworks. Additionally, Roundhouse Games’ team members were reallocated to different tasks.
