She rose to fame as the beloved character of Jenny in the Aussie 80s TV hit, Hey Dad..!
Sarah Monahan has switched careers and recently became the owner of a popular new bar on Sydney’s north shore.
Photos have emerged of Sarah behind the bar at Honey Rider in Neutral Bay.
The photos show Sarah, who celebrated her 49th birthday on Sunday, still sporting her well-known smile. However, the former child star looks very different from her time on a beloved Australian sitcom.
In a photo, Sarah is standing in front of her new bar, wearing blue jeans and a delicate grey Henley shirt.
The former actress, now an author, looked great with a short, flattering haircut, a braided belt, and dangling earrings.
In another photo, shared by Mosman Collective, Sarah can be seen pulling a schooner of ale.
The news organization’s Instagram page shared an old photo of Sarah as a child, showing her with pigtails.
Sarah took over the keys of the establishment on April 12, which coincided with her birthday.
Shortly after becoming the owner of the bar, Sarah spoke about the abuse she experienced from her “Hey Dad…!” co-star, Robert Hughes.
‘After all that I’ve been through, I’ve found my happy place again,’ she said.
‘I hope everyone can come and find their happy place at Honey Rider, too.’
Sarah lived in the US for two decades before moving back to Australia in 2022. She now resides in Mosman, close to the bar she owns on bustling Military Road.
Sarah explained that her husband, Matt Morris, convinced her to buy the bar, telling her she deserved a treat.
I’m so excited about the future of Honey Rider! It’s been my go-to place for 15 years, and the owner is planning some amazing updates. She’s going to add studio space so local artists and creators can easily make podcasts and videos – it’s exactly what this community needs!
Sarah was one of 10 people who accused Hey Dad..! star Robert Hughes of molesting them as children.
In 2014, Robert was sentenced to six years in jail for 10 child sex charges.
Although accusations against Hughes surfaced in the 1990s, it wasn’t until Sarah publicly shared her story in a 2010 television interview that the police launched a large-scale investigation into his alleged sexual misconduct.
Hughes played Sarah’s on-screen father on the show from 1987 to 1994.
She was six years old when she joined the cast.
After serving time in prison, Hughes was released on parole in 2022 and sent back to the UK. He had previously given up his Australian citizenship.
Now 77, it is understood Hughes has remained in the UK with his wife Robyn Gardiner.
I was deeply affected by Sarah’s memoir, Allegedly, published in 2016. She bravely shared the incredibly painful story of the abuse she experienced with a certain actor, and it was truly heartbreaking to read her account.
