Heroscape, featuring the best tabletop terrain ever made, is back
As a long-time gamer with a soft spot for miniature wargames and intricate terrain pieces, I can’t contain my excitement over the return of Heroscape: Age of Annihilation Master Set! Having grown up playing this game back in 2004, I hold fond memories of the unique warring factions and the innovative terrain system. The interlocking plastic tiles were a game-changer for me, allowing for effortless creation of diverse landscapes and adding depth to my gaming experiences.
The cherished miniatures wargame, Heroscape, has made a comeback and is now up for grabs in the market. We at TopMob were fortunate enough to open the box (though not yet played it) of the new Heroscape: Age of Annihilation Master Set. Despite its initial bumpy introduction in 2022, the revival appears quite promising. And here’s some excellent news – the game’s impressive, hefty terrain pieces are set to be accessible once more for everyone to relish.
Introduced in 2004, Heroscape is a unique strategy game with an intriguing backstory of clashing factions from various bizarre and sinister universes. However, the game’s most lasting contribution lies in its terrain feature – a brilliant system of interlocking plastic tiles that stack effortlessly on the tabletop, allowing for effortless creation of 3D landscapes with hills, valleys, and rivers. After Hasbro’s crowdfunding attempt failed, the franchise was acquired by Renegade Game Studio and is now up for pre-order. The new tiles closely resemble their predecessors, ensuring compatibility with previous terrain sets.
Enthusiasts have amassed collections of these tiles for decades, snatching up auction items in large quantities to incorporate them into various gaming setups. These tiles are perfect for tabletop games such as “Dungeons & Dragons” and “Pathfinder,” where they can be utilized for combat encounters or representing travel across terrain. Their versatility makes them an essential addition to nearly any role-playing game, particularly those with a hexagonal grid system like “BattleTech” and other tactical wargames. Although these tiles have been scarce since the original production ceased, this revival promises that a new wave of gamers will be able to experience their benefits.
As a passionate gamer, I can’t help but get excited about the latest addition to my collection – the HeroScape: Age of Annihilation Master Set. Now, picture this: the fundamental edition costs around $125 and brings you an impressive 74 terrain pieces in total. That’s a whopping 330 hexes of play area for those who can’t get enough! Believe me, it’s quite a challenge to find such a vast amount of terrain at a bargain price on auction sites. And the best part? The shipping is about to begin soon!
