After a successful first season, The Pitt returns with more intense emergency room action. The second season follows the chaotic shifts during a busy Fourth of July weekend, offering viewers a thrilling and visceral experience.
As a TV critic, I have to say R. Scott Gemmill, known for his work on ER, has delivered a compelling premise with The Pitt. The show centers around Noah Wyle – yes, that Noah Wyle! – who not only stars as Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, a seasoned attending physician at a Pittsburgh hospital, but also wears multiple hats as an executive producer, writer, and director. Robby’s in charge of the entire emergency department team, but here’s the twist: he’s clearly still grappling with the trauma of the pandemic. And, adding to the drama, he’s just one shift away from a much-needed three-month break – a cross-country motorcycle trip, no less – which promises a fascinating setup for the season.
Wyle described his character as being in a place where he’s trying to help himself by fixing up an old motorcycle and taking a journey of self-discovery – a trip that’s both a little romantic and inspired by literature, according to the Associated Press.
So, we’re saying goodbye to Robby, which is sad, but it also means new characters are joining the chaos at the hospital! I’ve put together a quick rundown of all the fresh doctors and nurses we’re meeting in the second season of that medical show everyone’s obsessed with right now.
Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi

As Dr. Robby prepares for a three-month break filled with a motorcycle trip, Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi, known from shows like The Deuce, The L Word: Generation Q, and Blackbird) is stepping in as the new head doctor at the hospital. They have different ideas about how to run things – Robby prefers traditional methods, while Al-Hashimi wants to use new technology like digital patient records and AI. Robby is initially resistant to Al-Hashimi’s approach, but there’s also a noticeable tension between them that sometimes feels like more than just disagreement – though Moafi says a romantic relationship isn’t guaranteed.
She told USA Today there won’t be any awkward or hidden moments between the characters. Instead, she envisioned their interactions as a natural, animalistic dance – like two wild animals cautiously approaching each other, observing and getting to know one another. It’s a tense but subtle connection, full of unspoken energy. Her character is accustomed to pressure and being challenged by men, but Dr. Robby presents a different kind of dynamic altogether.
Joy Kwon

Joy Kwon, played by Irene Choi (known for her roles in Truth Be Told and Pam & Tommy, and as a recurring guest on Community), is a third-year medical student. She’s learning from Dr. Dennis Whitaker (Gerran Howell), who approaches patient care very clinically—meaning he doesn’t seem particularly concerned with their well-being. This detached attitude could be a problem for Joy, as PTMC doesn’t seem to reward uncaring doctors.
James Ogilvie

Another new doctor, James Ogilvie (played by Lucas Iverson, known from The Gilded Age), comes across as overly confident and a bit of a show-off. He lacks empathy, which suggests he’s likely to make mistakes. The hospital environment seems like the perfect place for someone like him to quickly learn a humbling lesson.
Emma Nolan

Emma Nolan, a new nurse played by Laëtitia Hollard, is a welcome change from the typical medical student. Originally from northern Michigan, this enthusiastic trainee works with Nurse Dana and is eager to learn, though she’s still finding her way in a demanding job. While a bit inexperienced, viewers will likely root for her as she adjusts to the challenges of her new career.
